NASUWT – The Teachers’ Union has published new findings highlighting a concerning rise in misogyny in schools. Based on a survey of more than 5,000 teachers, the research reveals that almost one in four female teachers experienced misogyny from a pupil in the past year. Additionally, one in five teachers reported being subjected to discriminatory language, including sexist, racist and homophobic remarks. Alarmingly, misogynistic comments were frequently made after staff attempted to challenge or manage pupil behaviour.
In response, the union is calling for mandatory professional development to better equip teachers to identify, challenge and safely de‑escalate behaviour linked to online radicalisation, sexism and hate. This report reinforces the urgent need for proactive, whole‑school approaches to tackling harmful attitudes and protecting staff wellbeing.
