👏 A Big Thank You to Billy Addy

We’d like to say a huge thank you to Billy Addy, who has been working on the Pits to Pitches project since September.

Billy has played a massive role in the success of the project so far — helping us capture stories, connect with communities and bring the proud mining and sporting heritage of our villages to life.

From supporting filming days to working with local schools, his effort and enthusiasm have made a real difference.

Projects like this only work because of people who care about preserving our history and sharing it with the next generation — and Billy has been a huge part of that.

Thank you Billy for everything you’ve done so far for Pits to Pitches. 👏⛏️⚽

🙏 Thank You Dodworth

A big thank you to everyone who came along to our Pits to Pitches Filming Day at Tappers in Dodworth.

It was fantastic to hear so many brilliant stories about life in the pits, local sports teams, the welfare and the community spirit that made Dodworth such a special place.

We’re especially grateful to everyone who shared memories, brought along photographs, medals and memorabilia, and helped us capture an important part of the village’s history.

These stories and images will now become part of the Pits to Pitches project, helping educate young people in local schools and preserving Dodworth’s proud mining and sporting heritage for future generations.

Thank you again for your support — and for helping keep these stories alive. ⛏️⚽

Today marks the anniversary of the end of the Miners’ Strike a moment that shaped communities like ours forever.

For many families in Darfield and across Barnsley, the strike wasn’t just something in a history book. It was lived. It was felt. It changed livelihoods, villages and futures.

As we remember that day, it feels especially meaningful that this week our team begins a 10-week project at Darfield Upperwood School.

We’ll be working with young people to help them understand their village’s proud mining and sporting heritage where it came from, what it meant to families, and why it still matters today.

The stories, the resilience, the community spirit and the role sport played in bringing people together, these are things worth preserving and passing on.

Because our history isn’t just about the past.

It helps shape who we are.

Football By The Slag Heaps

This clip, from the 1975 BBC ‘Shafts Of Sunlight’ shows Frickley Athletic FC, from South Elmsall, West Yorkshire as they battle it out on a pitch set against slag heaps. Football was intrinsically linked with mining and the communities that emerged from it. Many miners welfare teams still exist, including Frickley Athletic, who went on to reach the FA Cup in the 1980s.
