Barnsley ASCL offer skills courses & qualifications, employability support, community learning and courses for businesses.

Our mission is to empower adults, families and communities to challenge disadvantage and achieve their potential. Barnsley Adult Skills & Community Learning offer opportunities for all adults in the Barnsley borough (19+). These include:

- Skills courses which can lead to qualifications, including English, maths, ICT and working with children

- Courses for adults with learning difficulties and disabilities (helping them to live independently and / or gain employment)

- Information Advice & Guidance for learning and work (including CVs, job search, interview skills, confidence building)

- Community learning courses for wellbeing, interest and enjoyment

- Courses to help business meet statutory requirements (health & Safety, food safety, First Aid)

Learners on our Getting Job Ready with Digital and AI course have been experiencing a new way to practise their interview skills using VR and AI.

Using their own CV and a job specification for a role they had applied for, learners completed a realistic AI-powered practice interview through a VR headset. Afterwards, they received personalised feedback on their performance and tips to help improve their interview technique.

Three out of four learners found the experience really helpful in preparing them for a real interview. Although one learner found wearing the headset difficult, they enjoyed the concept and were still able to take part in much of the experience.

It was a great opportunity to use emerging technology in a practical, meaningful way to support learners towards employment.

We want to wish Claire congratulations on achieving her Level 2 Functional Maths qualification!

Here is what Claire has to say about her experience:

Achieving my Level 2 Functional Skills Maths qualification has been such a positive experience.
The quality of teaching was excellent, and I learned so many techniques that completely changed the way I think about maths. The methods I was taught will stay with me and have made maths much more accessible and memorable.
As an IT tutor, I now feel confident explaining the maths behind functions and formulas in Excel, which is something I previously found challenging.
I was very nervous about returning to study maths later in life, but I really didn't need to be. The way everything was explained made it easy to understand and helped build my confidence throughout the course.
If you need a Level 2 maths qualification for work, career progression or personal development and are worried about coming back into the classroom, I would encourage you to speak to the Adult Skills team. Visit the centre, meet the staff and find out what support is available.
The learning environment is welcoming, supportive and designed for adults. You're encouraged to ask questions as many times as you need until you feel confident and ready to move forward.
I never thought I would achieve my Level 2 maths qualification after all these years, but I'm delighted to say I proved myself wrong!
It's never too late to gain a qualification, build your confidence and achieve something you're proud of. 😊

Recently this Maths class took part in practical measurement activities, where they were asked to estimate the size, weight, length, and capacity of a range of different items.
They then measured each item accurately to determine the actual values, comparing these with their initial estimates. Following this, learners developed their understanding further by converting between different metric units of measurement.
This helped to reinforce both their estimation skills and their ability to work confidently with metric conversions.

On Friday, all the learners took their Level 2 Functional Skills exam and are awaiting their results.

To ensure they are keeping up with their skills, we are having a specific focus this week on the use of formulas for area and perimeter, scale factors/scaled diagrams, and the use of money.

These activities allow for the learners to apply their knowledge to real-world contexts and provide inspiration for them to apply their Maths skills in the future at home.
