πŸ’œ Barnsley Carers & Loved Ones Cancer Support Group πŸ’œ

Barnsley Carers & Loved Ones Cancer Support Group was created to provide support, friendship and understanding for anyone caring for, supporting, or affected by a loved one's cancer diagnosis.

Whether you're currently caring for somebody undergoing treatment, supporting a family member through a cancer journey, living with the impact of a cancer diagnosis within your family, or navigating life after loss, you're welcome here.

Our group offers a relaxed and supportive environment where people can connect with others who truly understand the challenges that cancer can bring. Whilst cancer may be what brings us together, our group is about much more than cancer. It's about friendship, support, laughter, shared experiences, and helping people feel less alone.

Over recent months we've enjoyed walks, wellbeing sessions, bowling, and opportunities to meet others who understand the realities of caring and supporting someone with cancer. We also regularly share information about local services, support available, wellbeing activities and opportunities to connect with others.

We have lots planned for the months ahead, including further social events, walks, crafts, guest speakers, awareness sessions and opportunities for members to shape the future of the group.

If you're looking for support, friendship, understanding or simply a place where you don't have to explain yourself, we'd love to welcome you.

We have some lovely sessions coming up over the next few months and wanted to share a little more about what members can look forward to.

πŸ“– Pieces of Me – Scrapbook Wellbeing Project
Our new wellbeing project focuses on helping members reconnect with themselves beyond cancer, caring responsibilities and bereavement.

Together we will be creating personal scrapbooks filled with memories, photographs, achievements, favourite places, people, quotes and the moments that have shaped us. There is no right or wrong way to do it and absolutely no crafting experience needed.
Members are welcome to bring:
✨ Photographs (copies are absolutely fine)
✨ Tickets, postcards or keepsakes
✨ Favourite quotes or poems
✨ Letters or cards
✨ Anything that tells part of your story

🌿 Group Visit to Wentworth Castle Gardens (FEEL FREE TO FETCH A PLUS ONE ALONG)
Thanks to the National Trust, we have been invited to spend an afternoon exploring the beautiful gardens and grounds at Wentworth Castle Gardens.

Following our walk, we will have use of a private room for refreshments and a flower-themed craft activity kindly provided by the National Trust team.

πŸ’™ Looking After Tomorrow with Seaman & Keys
This session will provide gentle, practical information around some of the legal, financial and emotional considerations that can arise when living with or supporting someone through serious illness.
Topics may include wills, mortgages, workplace considerations, future planning and understanding the support available. This is not a sales session and has been offered free of charge following the personal experiences of the facilitator.

πŸ’š Gaia Soul Wellbeing Session
This session will focus entirely on you.
Many carers and loved ones spend so much time supporting others that they forget to look after themselves. This relaxed wellbeing session will provide an opportunity to pause, reflect and reconnect through gentle wellbeing activities, grounding exercises, confidence-building and self-care.

🌼 We are also continuing our wellbeing walks, guest speakers and social sessions, with discussions taking place with other organisations about future opportunities and activities for the group.

As always, the group remains a welcoming and informal space for carers, friends, family members and those bereaved due to cancer.

πŸ’› New members are always welcome.

πŸ’› A Little Extra Help Needed πŸ’›

Alongside our support group sessions, members have been creating beautiful handmade items for our Kindness Baskets, which are placed around the community for people affected by cancer to take free of charge.

We are currently looking for additional friendly community spaces, cafΓ©s, libraries or local businesses who may be willing to display a small Kindness Basket alongside information about our group.

We also warmly welcome donations, of any amount, towards craft materials and session resources. Donations are never expected, but they do help us continue creating kindness items, memory projects and wellbeing activities for members affected by cancer.

If you know of a suitable location, would like to support the project, or have any ideas, please feel free to get in touch. Every act of kindness, no matter how small, helps us continue supporting local families affected by cancer. πŸ’›

πŸ’› National Trust Visit – Barnsley Carers & Loved Ones Cancer Support Group πŸ’›

I am delighted to share that we have been invited to visit the beautiful Wentworth Castle Gardens by the National Trust.

🌿 Tuesday 30th June
πŸ•‘ 2:00PM
πŸ“ Meet at the main visitor reception / car park.

This will be an opportunity to enjoy the gardens together, spend time outdoors, have a gentle walk at our own pace and explore everything the site has to offer.

Following our visit, we will have use of a private room where refreshments will be available, along with a lovely flower-themed craft activity kindly provided by the National Trust team.

It should be a really relaxed and enjoyable afternoon, offering the chance to connect with others, enjoy nature and spend some time focusing on wellbeing.

If you would like to attend, please feel free to let me know directly, via a message to Barnsley Carers & Loved Ones Affected By Cancer Social & Support Group page or a comment. This helps me provide estimated numbers to the National Trust and allows me to keep track of attendance for planning and welfare purposes.

A huge thank you to the National Trust team for supporting our group. I know this will be a wonderful afternoon for our members. πŸ’›

πŸ’› Exciting Things Ahead at Barnsley Carers & Loved Ones Cancer Support Group πŸ’›

We have some wonderful sessions and opportunities coming up over the next few months, and I wanted to share a little glimpse of what's ahead. ✨

🎨 Pieces of Me Project

One of our upcoming projects will be Pieces of Me, a creative scrapbooking and memory-keeping project designed to help people tell their story, celebrate the things that matter most to them, and reconnect with who they are beyond cancer, caring responsibilities or bereavement.

Many people tell me that cancer impacts every part of life. Sometimes we can lose sight of our hobbies, interests, achievements, favourite memories and even parts of our identity whilst focusing on treatment, caring for others or navigating grief.

Through scrapbooking, journaling, photographs, memories, quotes, keepsakes and creative activities, we'll be creating personal books that reflect who we are, where we've been and what matters to us.

πŸ“Έ If you'd like to take part, please start having a look through photographs, old cards, letters, tickets, memorabilia, magazine cuttings, meaningful quotes or small keepsakes that you'd like to include. Don't worry if you're concerned about using original photographs, these can be copied.

πŸ’™ Looking After Tomorrow – Practical Information Session
πŸ“… Tuesday 18th August | 2PM

We are pleased to welcome Sian from Seaman & Keys, who has kindly offered her time free of charge to provide a practical information session specifically for those living with cancer, carers, loved ones and families affected by cancer.

This is not a sales event.

Instead, the session will provide gentle guidance around some of the practical and legal considerations that many families find themselves facing, including:

βœ”οΈ Wills and future planning
βœ”οΈ Mortgages and housing considerations
βœ”οΈ Financial protection options
βœ”οΈ Workplace and employment considerations
βœ”οΈ Planning ahead during serious illness

These conversations aren't always easy, but they can be incredibly important and many members have previously asked for further information around these topics.

🌿 Potential National Trust Partnership

I am also incredibly excited to share that I have an upcoming meeting with Wentworth Castle Gardens to discuss the possibility of hosting themed sessions and visits for our group.

This is very much in the early stages, but the opportunity to bring people together in such beautiful surroundings for wellbeing, connection and support would be amazing. Watch this space! 🌳

πŸ’š Gaia Soul Wellbeing Sessions

We're also going to be welcoming Charlotte from Gaia Soul to deliver wellbeing sessions for our members.

A message from Charlotte: "I know from personal experience how easy it is for carers and loved ones supporting somebody to completely lose themselves in the process. Sometimes people spend so much time being strong for everybody else that they don't get space to breathe themselves."

These sessions are designed to provide exactly that.

Possible activities may include:

πŸ’š Confidence and self-worth exercises
πŸ’š Guided reflection and journaling
πŸ’š Calm discussion and connection with others
πŸ’š Wellbeing activities tailored to the group
πŸ’š Optional affirmation and crystal elements

The focus is simply on helping people leave feeling calmer, lighter and more connected to themselves.

✨ We are also currently in discussions with several other organisations regarding future talks, workshops and activities for members, so there is lots to look forward to.

As always, thank you for being part of the group. Whether you've attended once, attend regularly, or simply follow along online, your support means so much.

A huge thank you to everyone who came along to our bowling evening 🎳❀️

It was such a lovely night filled with laughter and good company. The highlight of the evening was Mick's impressive attempt to destroy the lane by breaking the pins! πŸ˜‚

As always, I'm incredibly grateful for each and every one of you. Thank you for your continued support, kindness and for helping to make this group such a welcoming and special place to be.

Looking forward to seeing you all again soon... 🀍
