Last night we had a very special guest and former Barnsley Sea Cadet Lt Chris Stone RN.

Lt Stone had a tour of our rapidly developing unit reminiscing on what it was like and where we were heading as a unit, using these positives he decided to let cadets design their own Future Combat Ship.

Cadets added everything they felt was needed in today's changing and challenging world and HMS Diomede was created (please note, this is a cadet interpretation and not future planning for Diomede to join the line 😉)

Thank you Chris for joining us and we hope the cadets and staff impressed you.

We look forward to seeing you soon when phase 3 of our unit improvements are completed.

You may have figured out that yesterday's update wasn't strictly true. What isn't an April's Fool trick is this:

Cadets offer so many opportunities for young people in Barnsley, tonight our Royal Marines Cadets Detachment head off to Easter Camp where they will learn everything from Basic Fielcraft, Skill at Arms and Drill.

We push young people outside their comfort zone offering opportunities beyond anything they see in school, and sometimes those opportunities offer other opportunities.

LCpl Grayling is presently the Lord Mayors Cadet and within that capacity he was offered the opportunity to join them in a fundraising event like no other. On the 8th April he will be leaping from a moving aircraft at 15,000 feet to raise vital funds for Help for Homeless Veterans and SOBS (Survivors of Bereavement by Su***de)

We are looking for more adventurous young people to join our ship's company! Is that you? Message today.

After 50 years of no direct access to water with our Sea Cadets and Royal Marines Cadets, the Royal Navy decided to step in and assist.

Work started this morning when the HMS Queen Elizabeth steamed up the Dearne and Dove Canal in an effort to open Barnby Basin for rowing and Paddle Sports. As you can see local dog walkers and fishermen came along to support the effort.

This should see the cadets in their new boat station by Summer 2026, that is assuming we can get the Queen Elizabeth turned at Wintersett Reservoir, the Royal Navy did say that if this were difficult they would donate for us to use as our new inland boating station.

Watch the canal today for updates on the journey.

We are recruiting.

A big thank you to Holgate Lodge who attended the unit and presented £400 to our unit.

The cadets gave them a warm and friendly welcome before taking them on a grand tour of the unit highlighting the areas where the money will be put to good use.

We would like to pass on our thanks and we look forward to working with you all again soon.
