Following the severe traffic disruption experienced in Barmouth over the Bank Holiday weekend, Barmouth Town Council wants to reassure residents that we share the community's concerns and frustrations. We live here too. We see, hear and experience the same issues as everyone else across the town, and many of us were out monitoring the situation throughout the weekend, gathering evidence of the issues and shortcomings in the traffic management arrangements. We have also been working actively for many weeks to predict, warn about and mitigate the risks associated with the roadworks and road closures affecting the town.
While Barmouth is no stranger to busy Bank Holiday weekends, the level of congestion experienced this year was unacceptable. The combination of the Cae Glas roadworks, the closure of Harbour Road, and widespread illegal parking created conditions that led to significant gridlock, disruption to public transport services and concerns for public safety.
In the weeks and months leading up to the weekend, the Town Council repeatedly raised concerns with the relevant authorities and contractors, highlighting the likely impact on traffic flow, access and emergency services. We also put forward practical suggestions and mitigation measures that we believed could have reduced the disruption. Unfortunately, these concerns were not acted upon to the extent we had hoped.
Since the weekend, the Town Council has been in extensive discussions with Gwynedd Council to ensure the situation is fully reviewed and lessons are learned. We are seeking answers, escalating our concerns where necessary, and continuing to press for better planning and traffic management in the future.
We would like to thank residents who stepped in to help where they could, and everyone who showed patience and understanding during extremely difficult circumstances.
Barmouth Town Council remains committed to working on behalf of the community. We will continue to challenge where necessary, work constructively with partners, and do everything within our power to help prevent a repeat of the problems experienced this weekend.
Yn dilyn yr aflonyddwch traffig difrifol a brofwyd yn Abermaw dros benwythnos Gŵyl y Banc, mae Cyngor Tref Abermaw am sicrhau trigolion bod pob un o'r cynghorwyr yn rhannu pryderon a rhwystredigaethau'r gymuned. Rydym ni hefyd yn byw yma, ac rydym wedi gweld a phrofi'r un problemau â phawb arall.
Bu nifer o gynghorwyr allan yn monitro'r sefyllfa drwy gydol y penwythnos, yn casglu tystiolaeth ac yn gwneud beth oedd yn bosibl i helpu. Ers wythnosau, mae'r Cyngor hefyd wedi bod yn codi pryderon ynghylch effaith y gwaith ffordd a'r cau ffyrdd ar dref Abermaw.
Er bod Abermaw yn gyfarwydd â phenwythnosau prysur dros Ŵyl y Banc, roedd lefel y tagfeydd eleni yn annerbyniol. Arweiniodd y gwaith ffordd yng Nghae Glas, cau Heol yr Harbwr a pharcio anghyfreithlon mewn sawl man at dagfeydd difrifol, amhariad ar wasanaethau trafnidiaeth gyhoeddus a phryderon am ddiogelwch y cyhoedd.
Yn ystod yr wythnosau a'r misoedd cyn y penwythnos, cododd y Cyngor Tref bryderon dro ar ôl tro gyda'r awdurdodau a'r contractwyr perthnasol. Cyflwynwyd nifer o awgrymiadau ymarferol gennym a allai fod wedi lleihau'r problemau, ond yn anffodus ni weithredwyd arnynt i'r graddau yr oeddem wedi gobeithio.
Ers y penwythnos, mae'r Cyngor Tref wedi bod mewn trafodaethau helaeth gyda Chyngor Gwynedd i sicrhau bod y sefyllfa'n cael ei hadolygu'n llawn a bod gwersi'n cael eu dysgu. Byddwn yn parhau i bwyso am gynllunio a rheolaeth traffig well yn y dyfodol.
Hoffem ddiolch i'r trigolion a helpodd lle'r oedd modd, ac i bawb a ddangosodd amynedd a dealltwriaeth yn ystod amgylchiadau anodd iawn.
