There will be an opportunity for people, communities and the business sector in Gwynedd to have their say on the introduction of a Visitor Levy which will support a more sustainable visitor economy for the county.

At a meeting of the Council yesterday, members accepted a report on the Visitor Levy in Gwynedd and agreed to proceed with a consultation process. This will include the opportunity to complete a questionnaire, attend drop-in sessions and dedicated events.

During the meeting, the members heard that the introduction of a Levy has the potential to generate income to support local popular destinations and respond to challenges.

The report identifies several potential areas where the levy could be invested in the future. These include: support for businesses events and communities; improve public toilets and extend their opening hours; project which support cultural heritage and the Welsh language; improve public transport and footpaths; and respond to visitor pressures on the environment and nature.

The survey will open May 20 and close on July 15. If Cyngor Gwynedd decides to adopt the Levy, the earliest it can be brought in is 1 October, 2027.

UK staycation demand is predicted to surge in 2026, with North Wales Tourism reporting a 20% increase in domestic holiday searches compared to last year.

That could mean big opportunities for coastal towns like Barmouth, but also challenges around staffing, accommodation, infrastructure and visitor expectations.

North Wales Tourism are asking tourism and hospitality businesses for their views on 2026 and beyond, so if you run a local business it’s well worth taking a few minutes to complete the survey and help make sure Barmouth’s voice is heard.

Final call for the 2026–27 Barmouth Town Guide 📣
We’re now in the final stages of designing the next edition of the Barmouth Town Guide and want to make sure every local business that would like to be included has the opportunity.

We can still squeeze in a small number of additional advertisers before the artwork is completed and businesses also have the option to appear online only if preferred.

The new guide is being refreshed and will be supported by an updated barmouth-wales website, currently being redeveloped with a more interactive layout and improved visitor experience for visitors planning their stay.

This is all about helping visitors discover what the town offers, stay longer, and support local businesses.

If you run a business in Barmouth (or nearby) and haven’t yet been contacted but would like details, please message the page or email [email protected]

We don’t want to miss anyone, please tag any businesses who might want to be included.
