A message from Elmet Lions Club CIO

We are writing to you about our annual fundraising event;

The Great Selby Bike Ride

where cyclists have been able to fundraise for four charities that we nominate.

This year we are making a major change to the event which may affect entrants like yourself.

We will not be nominating any beneficial charities

Instead cyclists will be able to fundraise for the charity that they support and even claim Gift Aid of 20% on any donations they receive if they use Justgiving to collect donations.

You can check if your chosen charity is registered with Justgiving by following this link:

https://greatselbybikeride.lionsclub.co/2026/03/19/is-your-charity-registered-with-justgiving/

Reminder about the event

The two routes are signposted and marshalled and each has a drinks stop en route. Mobile first aiders will be present on both routes. Barlby High School has extensive parking if you arrive by car. A hot and cold drinks bar with snacks operates before the start, while an ice cream van will be present on the cyclists’ return.

We have attached a poster about the ride to advertise the ride to your supporters and provide the website links:

On the 20th March the Selby Times published an article about the Great Selby Bike Ride which takes place on the 18th May from Barlby High School near Selby. It also featured my own experience in respect of the successul treatment of my pancreatic cancer, which has in part motivated me as one of the event organisers to fundraise for PCUK via this event. If you are a and would like to enter this event which will benefit PCUK, Martin House Children's Hospice, St Leonard's Hospice and the British Heart Foundation just go along to https://greatselbybikeride.lionsclub.co/how-to-enter/
and also sign up to Justgiving at

It’s been a dull winter as well as cold, with the German word ‘Dunkelflaute’ being added to the weather forecaster’s vocabulary.

However I’ve seen my first time trial of the year taking place this past weekend on the roads around Bramham and the daytime temperature has risen to double figures.

Time to think about events like the Great Selby Bike Ride 2025 which takes place on Sunday 18th May. It follows the previous format with a choice of two circular routes (25 and 45 miles) starting from Barlby High School at 10:00am, fully signposted and marshalled by our charity and community volunteers.

The beneficiary charities this year are Martin House Hospice, St Leonard’s Hospice, The British Heart Foundation and Pancreatic Cancer UK.

As a past rider and fundraiser we would like to invite you to take part again and beat the £1,500 per charity that we raised last year - an ambitious challenge with the loss of a major sponsor who contributed £1,500 to the event in previous years.

You can enter by following this link:-

and subscribe to Justgiving with your donation, enabling us to claim GiftAid from HMRC and boost your efforts with an extra 20%:-

We look forward to hearing from you and will be pleased to answer any questions you may have.
