VOLUNTEER WEEK
1 June – 7 June 2026
The Butterfly Tree is run entirely by volunteers both in the UK and Zambia. Most of our volunteers have been with us for 10 to 20 years. I would like to take this opportunity to say how grateful I am to the trustees and volunteers, without you nothing can be achieved. We are always in need of further help with fundraising, IT support and other administration roles. If you have a few spare hours and want to learn more about how you can help in the UK please email [email protected]
These are some of the projects The Butterfly Tree has provided:
Water, Healthcare, Malaria Prevention, Education, Food Security, Community Housing, and Orphan Support.

MALARIA PREVENTION
Thanks to a generous donation from the Inner Wheel Club of Solihull and the people who kindly donated to our recent malaria prevention appeal, more pupils at Nguba Secondary school received mosquito nets today. The cases of malaria in this area of Nyawa have increased this year due to lack of intervention. We have now donated a mosquito net to every pupil and teacher at this school. 760 in total. We urgently need to purchase more nets for other schools where pupils are falling sick and sadly, deaths have been recorded. A mosquito net costs just £6 and can save a child's life. SPECIAL EDUCATION
Thanks to receiving a substantial donation from Give a Hand, our Canadian partner, children with physical and mental health challenges in Mukwela, will shortly have their own space.
The Butterfly Tree has completed a 1x2 classroom block at Mukwela Primary school in Kalomo District, Zambia. The school has 1,265 pupils, including 80 children with special needs. More children from surrounding communities will be enrolled once the facility is handed over to the Ministry of Education who will provide trained teachers and ongoing support.

MALARIA PREVENTION
Thanks to a substantial grant from ALMT for our 'Mosquito Nets for Schools' prgramme more children will be protected from malaria. This is the second phase of a three-year grant to help reduce malaria cases in the Mulobezi District of Western Province, Zambia. The District has a population of 50,106. In 2025 there were 43,937 cases of malaria. The health facilities have recorded 24,678 cases in the first three months of 2026.
When we travel to countries where there is malaria we take preventative methods but for school-aged children living in areas where malaria is prevalent in Zambia there is no protection. A mosquito net costs just £6. If you would like to make a donation 100% will be used solely to buy mosquito nets. https://lnkd.in/epDMUHfr

WATER
Over 6 million people do not have access to clean water in Zambia. The rural areas are most in need. Providing clean water facilities saves time fetching water and reduces the risk of sickness in children caused by drinking polluted water from streams and shallow wells. In the past two weeks The Butterfly Tree has successfully drilled five new boreholes in Kalomo and Kazungula Districts. Children in Mabwa Atuba village cannot believe what they have witnessed!

MALARIA PREVENTION
Sadly, due to the lack of intervention for malaria prevention we learnt this week that another child in Nyawa died after contracting malaria. I recently gave a talk to the Inner Wheel Club of Solihull, one of The Butterfly Tree's long-time supporters, and was presented with a substantial cheque. The club has agreed that the funds can be used to purchase 125 mosquito nets to provide protection against malaria for more school children in Nyawa.

WATER
Successful drill found water at 70 metres for the community in Siamundia and surrounding villages. This latest borehole for the people will reduce the number of hours that people must walk to access water, and reduce the risk of sickness from drinking polluted water.

WATER
Thankfully, Zambia has experienced a very good rainy season. However, there are still numerous schools and communities that do not have access to clean water. In the past week has successfully drilled two new boreholes. The first one was at Kapulanga and surrounding villages for 155 households in Musokotwane. The second successful drill took place at Siamundia in Mukuni giving 145 households access to clean water. More drilling will take place this week thanks to a substantial donation from Nick Bousliman.

WORLD MALARIA DAY - 25th APRIL
'Driven to End Malaria: Now We Can. Now We Must.'
Malaria remains one of the biggest killers of man, causing over 600,000 deaths annually. 75% of all deaths are children under 5. The Butterfly Tree is passionate about supporting the fight against malaria and initiated a programme entitled 'Mosquito Nets for Schools' in 2017. The impact has been significant with reports showing that malaria cases and absenteeism from school have been reduced.
We urgently need more support to protect children in areas of high malaria prevalence in the rural areas of Zambia.
A mosquito nets costs just £6 ($8) and could save a child's life.
