Yn 2018 Croeso Menai oedd y grŵp Nawdd Cymunedol cyntaf yng Ngogledd Cymru. Yn Chwefror 2021 wedi tair blynedd o waith caled ac er gwaethaf yr heriau a gafwyd oherwydd Covid, bu modd inni groesawu teu

lu o Syria ac erbyn hyn maent wedi setlo’n dda iawn yn ein cymuned. Oherwydd y fath ymateb cadarnhaol a gafwyd gan bobl leol cawsom ein hysbrydoli i fwrw iddi i ddod ag ail deulu yma i ddechrau bywyd newydd. O ble bynnag y dônt, yr un ydy’r angen i sicrhau lle diogel i fyw ynddo ac i adeiladu dyfodol iddynt hwy a’u plant. Erbyn hyn ffurfiwyd ail dîm sy’n cael ei fentora gan aelodau’r tîm gwreiddiol. Mae gennym y fantais o ddysgu oddi wrth ein ‘Teulu Cyntaf’ o ran sut brofiad oedd o iddynt hwy. Gyda’ch anogaeth a’ch cefnogaeth chi, ein gobaith ydy y bydd teulu arall cyn bo hir yn canfod hafan ddiogel yn ein rhan ni o’r byd. Allwn ni ddod i siarad efo’ch mudiad? Byddem yn falch iawn o roi sgwrs ddwyieithog i roi mwy o wybodaeth i chi. Yn ôl aelodau Tîm 1: “dyma brofiad mwyaf dyrchafol a gwerth chweil fy mywyd” – roeddwn i wir eisiau gwneud mwy na rhoi a***n yn unig, bu’n brofiad gwych”. Ac yn ôl cymydog ein teulu cyntaf: “Ddylai neb fod yn amheus o gael Syriaid fel cymdogion – nhw ydy’r cymdogion gorau, mwyaf hyfryd a ges i erioed. Er mai ychydig iawn oedd ganddynt yn y wlad hon, roeddent yn dal i rannu bwyd efo ni. Rydwi’n hapus ac yn falch i’w galw nid yn unig yn gymdogion ond yn ffrindiau hefyd.”

Dywedodd ein ‘Teulu Cyntaf’:
“Rhoddodd pawb yn Croeso Menai hyder inni, a’r teimlad o ddiogelwch a heddwch meddwl yn ein bywyd yma. Gwnaethant inni deimlo ein bod yn perthyn yma a’n bod yn blant i’r wlad hon. Lle bynnag yr awn ni, gwelwn wên ar wynebau pobl. Mae pobl Prydain yn garedig, yn gyfeillgar ac yn ddiymhongar iawn. Aethom i’r Alban yn yr haf a chawsom amser ardderchog ond roeddem yn colli pawb yn Croeso Menai ac yn colli Cymru. Croeso Menai yw ein teulu ac rydym yn teimlo’n ddiogel wrth gael teulu mawr o’n cwmpas.”

CROESO MENAI - welcoming a refugee family through community sponsorship

In 2018 Croeso Menai became the first Community Sponsorship group in North Wales. In February 2021 after three years of hard work and despite the challenges presented by Covid-19, we welcomed a family from Syria and they are now settled very happily in our community. The wonderfully positive response from local people inspired us to start the ball rolling to bring a second family to make a new life here. We do not know where a family will originate from. Wherever they come from, their need to have a safe place to live and build a future for themselves and their children is the same. A new team has come together under the mentorship of original team members. We have the benefit of learning from our ‘First Family’ about how it was for them. We hope that, with your encouragement and support, it won’t be long before another family finds a peaceful sanctuary in our much-loved part of the world. We are required by the Home Office to raise a minimum of £9,000. This fund will go towards preparing and equipping a house for the family; providing language classes; interpreting and translation services; collecting them from the airport; clothes; toys; some spending money for when they first arrive etc. Can you, or your organisation, help us reach this goal by holding a quiz, sponsored event, cake sale, auction of promises? Or choosing Croeso Menai as your Charity of the Year? Every donation, whether big or small, will go a long way towards welcoming our second family. For a suggested subscription of £10 a year you can join Croeso Menai to keep up to date with all our activities. For more details, contact [email protected]. Could we come and speak to your organisation? We would be very pleased to present a bilingual talk to help you find out more. Members of Team 1 said “it was the most uplifting and rewarding experience of my life” – “I really wanted to do more than just give money, this has been wonderful”. And this from the neighbour of our first family: “No one should question having Syrians as neighbours – they are the best, most beautiful neighbours I’ve ever had. Even though they had very little in this country, they still shared food with us. I am very happy and proud to call them not only neighbours but also friends.”

Our ‘First Family’ said:
“Everyone in Croeso Menai reassured us, gave us all the feeling of safety and feel calm to live here. They helped us to feel we belong here and we are children of this country. Every time we go anywhere, we see smiles on people’s faces. British people are very kind, friendly and modest. We went to Scotland in the summer and had a great time, but we missed everyone in Croeso Menai and we missed Wales. We were really happy to come back home to Wales. We feel that Croeso Menai are our family and we feel the safety of having a big family around us.”

TODAY MARKS FOUR YEARS OF RESILIENCE AND COURAGE IN UKRAINE
Today is a day of silence, remembrance and pain.
Four years since the full-scale invasion began.
Four years of living between air raid sirens, frontline news and prayers.
Four years of mornings that begin with checking the phone: How was the night?
I arrived in Devon in April 2022 — with my child, suitcase, and a heart that remained at home.
Even now, I sometimes find myself building a “shield” in my thoughts — over my parents’ house, over our street… over all of Ukraine.
We have lost so much.
People. Peace of mind. Parts of our lives.
But we have not lost ourselves.
We bow our heads to every defender who became a shield for Ukraine.
We pray for those on the front line, in captivity, and those missing.
We thank everyone fighting in the trenches and in the rear — healing, volunteering, teaching.
Those raising children — the future of Ukraine.
And those here in the United Kingdom who continue to stand with us.
Four years ago, the enemy came at dawn to break us.
Instead, we stood shoulder to shoulder.
Ukraine lives.
Fights.
Stands strong.
And it will prevail.

IN MEMORIAM SUSAN HOFSTEEDE / ER COF AM SUSAN HOFSTEEDE

(please scroll down for English)
Ar Fedi 29ain 2025, yn ddisymwth, collasom ein cydweithiwr a’n ffrind gwerthfawr iawn, Susan Hofsteede. Mae pawb yn Croeso Menai, ac yn enwedig yn Dyma Ni Befriending, yn hiraethu’n fawr ar ei hôl. Roedd hi wedi cefnogi achosion heddwch, tosturi a chyfiawnder ers blynyddoedd lawer gan gynnwys ffoaduriaid a cheiswyr lloches yng Nghaint a mannau eraill. Pan symudodd hi a’i gŵr, Frans, i Fangor yn 2012, elwodd yr achosion hynny’n fawr o’i chefnogaeth. Buodd yn gyfrifol am fentrau amgylcheddol a chymdeithasol, ynghŷd â heddwch a chyfiawnder i’r rhai oedd yn ffoi rhag erledigaeth, trais, newyn a pherygl.

Roedd gan Sue hefyd asbri at fywyd a meddai ar synnwyr digrifwch dwfn. Roedd hi’n gyfranogwr gwych yn y gweithgareddau a garai, yn ogystal â bod yn drefnydd penderfynol, dyfeisgar ac effeithiol.

Ar ôl cymryd rhan dawel ym mentrau cyntaf Croeso Menai i Noddi Cymunedol a chefnogaeth yn y gymdeithas i ffoaduriaid Wcráin, ymunodd â’r tîm bach a sefydlodd Dyma Ni Befriending pan ddechreuodd llywodraeth y DU wasgaru Ceiswyr Lloches o amgylch y wlad gan gynnwys Gwynedd a Môn. Roedd hi'n gydlynydd ymroddedig i’r fenter ac yn gyfrifol am y grantiau cychwynnol a gawsom. Mae’r rhain wedi helpu ein ffrindiau i ddod i adnabod yr ardal, cael mynediad i iaith hanfodol a dysgeidiaeth arall, negydu ein system gofal iechyd, gwneud gwaith gwirfoddol, canfod dillad angenrheidiol, beiciau ac eitemau hanfodol eraill ac elwa ar chwaraeon, gweithgareddau awyr agored a llawer mwy.

Roedd Sue yn garedig, yn llawn tosturi ac yn barod bob amser i fynd yr ail filltir pan oedd defnyddiwr y gwasanaeth yn cael anhawsterau. Cynhwysai bobl leol gyda sgiliau, adnoddau a thalentau i gynnal sesiynau creadigol mewn cerddoriaeth, symudiad, crefftau ac ati. Roedd hi'n cydnabod anghenion ac yn gweithio i'w diwallu. Gwerthfawrogwyd ei hymdrechion yn fawr gan y rhai a dderbyniodd y cymorth, gan ein tîm cyfan a phawb sy'n gweithio gyda ni. Dyma nifer fach o’r amryw sylwadau a wnaed gan ein ffrindiau:

“She was such a kind, wise, and generous lady who always supported our community and welcomed us with care and warmth. Her kindness touched us all, and she will be deeply missed.”

“She was such a kind person and a true example, and I’ll always remember her.”

“I’ll never forget Sue and her kindness that makes all this process easier to cope with, her support and understanding that gives us hope.”

“She was my best, she was a kind person, honesty and role model for all of us.”

Meddai Sue amynedd a goddefgarwch wrth i ni wynebu rhwystredigaethau, tra’n dal at ei hegwyddorion a’i hymrwymiad yr un pryd. Bydd ei hysbryd a’i hesiampl yn parhau i ysbrydoli ein gwaith.

IN MEMORIAM SUSAN HOFSTEEDE

On 29th September 2025 we unexpectedly lost our greatly valued colleague and friend Susan Hofsteede.

All at Croeso Menai, and especially Dyma Ni Befriending, continue to miss her greatly. She had supported causes of peace, compassion and justice for many years, including refugees and asylum seekers in Kent and elsewhere. Her move, with her husband, Frans, to Bangor in 2012 resulted in huge benefit to the causes she supported here, including environmental and social initiatives, peace and justice and support for those who were fleeing from persecution, violence, hunger and danger.

Sue also had a great zest for life and sense of fun. A great participant in the activities she supported, as well as a determined, resourceful and effective organiser.

Having quietly participated in Croeso Menai’s first ventures into Community Sponsorship and social support for refugees from Ukraine, she willingly joined the small team who set up Dyma Ni Befriending when the UK government began dispersing Asylum Seekers around the country, including to Gwynedd and Anglesey. She was a committed coordinator of the initiative and responsible for the initial grants we received, which have helped our friends get to know the area, access essential language and other learning, negotiate our healthcare system, carry out voluntary work, acquire necessary clothes, bicycles and other essential items and benefit from sport, outdoor activities and much more.

Sue was unfailingly kind, compassionate and always ready to go the extra mile for a distressed service user with a difficulty. She brought in local people with skills, resources and talents to run creative sessions in music, movement, crafts etc. She recognised needs and worked to meet them. The efforts she made were hugely appreciated by those she helped, our whole team and all who work with us. Here are just a few of the many comments from our friends:

“She was such a kind, wise, and generous lady who always supported our community and welcomed us with care and warmth. Her kindness touched us all, and she will be deeply missed.”

“She was such a kind person and a true example, and I’ll always remember her.”

“I’ll never forget Sue and her kindness that makes all this process easier to cope with, her support and understanding that gives us hope.”

“She was my best, she was a kind person, honesty and role model for all of us.”

Sue exercised patience and tolerance at the frustrations we encounter, while at the same time maintaining her principles and commitment. Her spirit and example will continue to inspire our work.

Blwyddyn Newydd Dda!
Happy New Year!

Here is a positive article for once about supporting refugees and asylum seekers. May we all embrace this sentiment in 2026 and make the UK a kinder place to live for all newcomers.

I’ve taken in refugees from time to time, and formed lasting ties with them. It’s time to stop demonising those in need, says journalist and author Nell Frizzell

It is with great sadness that I share the news of the death of Heulwen Dickinson.
Heulwen was the most amazing humanita***n and campaigner, for the rights and freedom of people who suffered persecution and poverty, all over the world.
Heulwen ceaselessly cared for others from her home in North Wales. She gave her time, money and dedication so humbly and quietly, and opened doors for people in such dire need.
I have always admired Heulwen's incredible achievements, and her unfailing trust and conviction in humanity.
At this sad time for us all, my love and thoughts go in particular to Barry, Sophie, and all her family.
From everyone who knew her
