At our AGM last week, we were delighted to report, that in the 2024/25 year, as a result of our advice, advocacy and support, we generated over 6.1 million pounds for people who used our service.
This money enables people to buy food, heat their homes, pay their rent or mortgage and buy clothes for their children. A lot of this money is spent in The Ards and North Down Area, which also provides sustainability for our local independent shops and businesses.

Yesterday, we were delighted to welcome a full-house of attendees to our Conference-Breaking the Cycle-Real Help Against Poverty, which was held in Bangor. The event was not only to discuss the issues of poverty in our community, but also to hear about the work of many of our partners, whom we work with to help and support people.
The message from the conference was for people who are experiencing hardship at this time, to reach out and seek help.

Community Advice Ards and North Down (formerly Citizen’s Advice Bureau) are hosting a public event on Thursday 14th May titled “Breaking the Cycle: Real Help Against Poverty,” a dedicated event aimed at addressing the escalating cost-of-living challenges within the Ards and North Down borough.
While often perceived as an affluent area, the borough contains significant deprivation.

In Ards and North Down, specific issues such as fuel poverty, in-work poverty, and affordable housing continue to trap people in a generational cycle of hardship.

Expert Insights and Local Action
The conference is proud to announce two distinguished keynote speakers who will provide a data-driven look at the current landscape of deprivation in Northern Ireland:

Sarah Corrigan from The Law Centre (NI): Sarah will share insights from the Law Centre’s extensive work on social security and legal rights, highlighting the systemic barriers that keep people in financial distress.

Jude Hill-Mitchell from Save The Children: Jude will present the latest research into child poverty, focusing on the long-term impact on developmental outcomes and the specific challenges facing families in the current economic climate.

Both organisations have carried out extensive research into the root causes and profound impacts of poverty, offering a roadmap for how local communities can better advocate for those in need.

Highlighting Local Resilience
The event will also celebrate the work of the local charitable and voluntary sector, showcasing the positive impact of the vital work of organisations who provide daily lifelines to the community.

We will hear from the CEO’s of four organisations who are working to help and support people in various ways. Women’s Aid, Trussell Trust, North Down Community Network and habitat Ireland

On Thursday we held our quarterly team check‑in, bringing together staff from all of our branches to share updates, celebrate the successes of the past year, and look ahead to what’s coming next.

We were delighted to welcome Thomas Hudson from the South Eastern Trust, who delivered an insightful session on charges for residential and nursing care homes. He provided a clear overview of how the Trust financially assesses individuals entering care, giving our team valuable knowledge to strengthen our financial advice services.

We also heard from Anne Murdock, a Development Worker with Su***de Down to Zero, who spoke about su***de prevention, awareness, and the practical steps we can all take to build our own understanding and embed this learning into our services going forward.

A huge thank‑you to both of our speakers - and to all of our staff for attending and contributing to such a positive and productive session. 💙
