🌟 Our team had a great day last week at @‌ConnswaterCommunityGreenway ’s Climate Action Community Fun Day in East Belfast.

💬 We were there, chatting with local residents and families about the EastSide Trees project. This project is focused on planting more trees in two specific areas of East Belfast that have a low tree equity score, ensuring local communities are involved.

👀 A few weeks ago we shared our unexpected discovery of a cosy robin's nest inside one of our storage bags.

A few weeks later, here's the update! All six were sleeping soundly in their cosy nest when we last checked in. 💜

🌿 Bracken is thought to be the one of the most common plants in the world! This native fern provides a good habitat for nesting birds and cover for wildlife to move around safely, but too much of it can prevent important plants and tree seedlings from growing.

💪 That’s why our Mourne Park volunteers were recently clearing out some dense bracken areas to make space for nature to thrive. Thank you everyone for all your hard work!

🌳 Elderflower, often used to make elderflower cordial, comes from the elder tree (or shrub depending on its size). At this time of year, the elder's gorgeous white flowers are in their prime and bring a lot of beauty to our woodlands and green spaces.

🔎 Here's some tips for identifying it out and about - but remember to always be careful because there's some dangerous plants that can look similar: www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/blog/2021/06/how-to-identify-elder

👀 Have you discovered one of Belfast’s oldest woodlands yet? Carnmoney Hill has areas of rare woodland that are classed as ancient - meaning they have been there for at least 400 years.

🌳 Roughly 20 years ago we took on the woodland and started the process of restoring it. The wood is full of nature’s treasures as well as some fascinating historical features.

🌳Ancient woodlands are irreplacable. And we have hardly any left.

🌳 In Northern Ireland only 0.04% of our landscape is ancient woodland. These places are incredibly rare and special and they need to be protected. They're our richest and most complex land habitat and are home to more threatened species than any other habitat here.

🌸They are also beautiful places - often filled with seas of woodland flowers like bluebells and wood anemone.

Breaking News - Tullynagardy Wood rescued from development😍

We're delighted that Tullynagardy Wood in Newtownards, County Down has been saved from development thanks to the hard work of the local community and the Woodland Trust Northern Ireland.

The Planning Appeals Commission agreed with us this week that the woodland could not be destroyed to build five detached homes.

It's been a long road - this woodland has fought threats from developers for over 20 years but we are delighted that it has now been saved.🥰

It's these cases which remind us of the need to strengthen legal protection for our most precious ancient and long established woodlands.🌳
