Blue Lighthouse Surf CIC

Blue Lighthouse Surf CIC Funded learn to surf program supporting the health & wellbeing of those serving our communities in Scotland

The emergency services, NHS, social workers and teachers are all careers that attract people with a sense of duty and a willingness to put others before themselves. Unfortunately, the evidence shows that not enough is done to provide wellbeing support for those people - there is a mental health crisis in public services across Scotland. Blue Lighthouse CIC exists as a not-for-profit community inte

rest company, offering those men and women respite from the daily stresses of their jobs and tangible support for their health & wellbeing, in turn providing a benefit to both the organisations they work for and the wider community by supporting the wellbeing of the people that serve it. Our learn to surf program is an evidence-based intervention that delivers meaningful results for staff resilience and wellbeing, helping those serving in the public sector to carry out their roles at their best without sacrificing their health. With its integration of cold water immersion, exposure to blue spaces, mindfulness, and peer support, our program is a multifaceted approach that supports both physical and mental wellbeing with proven effectiveness.

How surf therapy creates real change for frontline workers πŸ‘‡

Every programme we run follows a clear path - from the resources we bring together, through the sessions we deliver, to the outcomes our participants experience.

Our logic model maps that journey: trained delivery partners and structured programmes leading to measurable improvements in stress, mental clarity, confidence, and coping strategies. Longer term, we're working to reduce isolation, prevent burnout, and support crisis prevention across Scotland's public services.
This isn't guesswork - our pilot showed an 18.4% improvement in participant wellbeing scores.

Healthier frontline workers means healthier communities. A ripple that grows into a wave!

🌊 Our 2026 programme dates are now open for sign-ups. If you're a frontline worker in Scotland, this is for you.

Work in the public sector and interested in wellbeing? We're looking for someone to join our board and help shape the direction of Blue Lighthouse after our pilot!

ℹ️ Non-Executive Director - Blue Lighthouse Surf CIC
Voluntary role | Quarterly meetings | Scotland-based

πŸ„ About Us
Blue Lighthouse supports Scotland's frontline public service workers through surf therapy programmes. Our 2025 pilot delivered an 18.4% improvement in mental wellbeing for NHS staff, teachers, police officers, paramedics, social workers, and armed forces personnel.

πŸ“ The Role
We're looking for a Non-Executive Director to join our board and help us grow. This is a voluntary position involving quarterly Zoom meetings to provide strategic input and governance oversight.

πŸ‘€ You'll Have:
- A connection to Scotland's public sector through current or prior work experience
- Commitment to supporting frontline worker wellbeing

🎯 What You'll Do:
- Attend quarterly board meetings (via Zoom)
- Optionally: support grant applications or facilitate introductions to public sector decision-makers

This is a flexible, low-commitment way to make real impact on an issue that matters - supporting those who serve our communities.

We're proud to share the results from our 2025 pilot programme 🌊

From April to October, we delivered 10 surf therapy sessions to a total of 31 frontline workers across the North East of Scotland - NHS staff, teachers, police officers, social workers, and emergency responders who give so much to our communities.

The results speak for themselves:
πŸ“Š 18.4% improvement in overall mental wellbeing
πŸ§˜β€β™€οΈ 33.8% improvement in feeling relaxed
πŸ’ͺ Participants reporting they're applying coping techniques at work and home

"This has been so healing – thank you for running this wonderful program."
"I have filled my own cup up while surfing, so I feel more patient and relaxed with my young children."

Our frontline workers deserve support that works. Cold water, blue spaces, mindfulness, peer connection, and overcoming challenges together - that's what Blue Lighthouse delivers.

We hit our Crowdfunder target! πŸŽ‰

On 31st October our crowdfunder came to an end, raising Β£1140 for 32 generous pledgers (coming in at Β£20 over target). We are fully funded for our pilot programme!

This in addition to our other fundraising efforts and the generous support of dryrobe supplying us with some warm gear for participants will allow us to run a 2 session pilot programme for 16 participants in 2025.

A huge thanks to everyone who has believed in, shown enthusiasm for, and donated to this project, helping bring it to life. We can't wait to run the first sessions next year!

We have used a random number generator to generate the winner for our Dryrobe raffle. Congratulations Jennifer McLoughlin! You have been sent an email with instructions on how to redeem 🎁
