In the run up to Christmas last year 1st Banbury Cross Rangers celebrated a little differently by taking part in a 12 days of Christmas Reverse Advent Calendar. Instead of the usual secret Santa gift exchange they were invited by 2nd Spencer Wood Brownies to collect donations for either a charity, food bank or pet food bank over the 12 weeks up to Christmas. The local Rangers group opted to support the Hygiene Bank, a nationwide project which distributes hygiene products to people who need them.
In the last meeting before Christmas the Rangers had a visit from the Banbury lead for the Hygiene Bank, who told them all about when it was set up and how he has seen the need for this type of support increasing over the past year. Hygiene poverty affects approximately 4.2 million of adults and children in the UK everyday with people not being able to afford soap, shampoo, toothpaste and deodorant. Being clean is linked to good health, confidence and dignity and supports well-being. During the meeting the Rangers also discussed how products could be made available in schools and have tried to help make links for this to happen.
With over 233 Girlguiding units taking part in the Reverse Advent event it was a massive success with 5,552 people taking part and earning a Guiding Badge.
