Fishing For Heroes

Fishing For Heroes Help us to help those who have given so much.... Who are Fishing for Heroes? Fishing for Heroes was founded in 2009 after a chance meeting at the 2008 Game Fair.

Tom, our senior instructor and co founder, worked with people with behavioral problems and learning disabilities for many years. Tom was already providing free fly fishing courses for veterans sent to him by the RBL and Combat Stress. Fishing for Heroes was born. What We Do

Fishing for Heroes provides fully expensed fly fishing courses as part of a Wellbeing package for veterans who are sufferin

g from,
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, combat fatigue or any other emotional or psychological problem relating to them having been
involved in active service. Any veteran from any of the three armed forces of either s*x can apply for our help. Although the more recent campaigns are foremost in people’s minds, any veteran from any era or conflict is eligible to apply. Currently many of these veterans are being missed by the mainline services and although they may have no physical or visible disability they are suffering, some quite severely. At this moment in time it can take an average 14 years for a veteran to receive the necessary help they require. We want to rectify this! The part of the package we can do is to teach fly fishing. This is a well known and accepted therapy for people suffering from
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and other emotional problems. To achieve this we will provide accommodation, transport
expenses, all tuition and fishing fees. The individual course is over four days, when we hope not only provide a respite break but more importantly we aim to give them a set of life skills which will enable the veterans to help themselves now and in the future. We then introduce beneficiaries to our Regional Get Together program which consists of events around the UK throughout the year. This year we aim to hold 45 events for up to 20 individuals at each event.

Today we were handed the keys to our Fishing for Heroes van at Mertrux Derby.
Mertrux have gone above and beyond.
The donators will wish to remain anonymous but I know you will see this and rest assured that it is very much appreciated, making a massive difference, in fact we on leaving Mertrux went straight to collect a substantial donation of tackle.
This will make carrying tackle around England , Scotland and Wales so much easier.
Thank you so much…….

That’s two Regional get Togethers today, one being in the beautiful surroundings of Ladybower Fishery in the Peak District. Although a bit chilly, the rain managed to hold off and everyone had a great time with plenty of fish to both boats and bank. A massive thanks to all the staff at Ladybower for making it such a great day and to Sue Jamieson for such scrumptious catering.
The second was at Mill Farm, a brilliant and friendly fishery in Wiltshire. Likewise a massive (as always) to Andre and his team for looking after all the guys so well.
Over the next couple of weeks we’ll be at Ellerdine fishery in Shropshire, and Sharpley in Cumbria. Last week we were at Exe Valley in Devon, Chigborough in Ess*x and Bessy Beck in Cumbria….. busy times.
During 2026 Fishing for Heroes will deliver between 60 and 70 Regional get Togethers with up to 25 guys at each.
In addition we will deliver approximately 30 individual 4 day induction courses, 20 2-day river specific courses for 40 guys and up to three, week long trips for 36 guys salmon fishing in Scotland……. After 17 years we know we’ve got something right.

By kind invitation of Lord Edward, again we had a fantastic day on the Derbyshire Wye, Hall beat at Haddon Hall.
A massive thank you to Jan and his team of helpers from the Peacock Fly Fishing Club for looking after us so well on what was cold and wet day, to Lou for brilliant photos to remember it by and to Yeti for producing special mugs to commemorate the day…… fantastic.
