Every year, a small number of promising young Lambeg drums are accepted into the prestigious LOL 239 Drum Training & Selection Programme.
Following 12 months of intensive basic training, one exceptional candidate is awarded the coveted title of Top Recruit.
🏅 But graduation is only the beginning.
The successful drum is then carefully paired with an experienced human handler for the next stage of its development. This demanding partnership may last 30–40 years, during which the drum gradually gains the confidence, stamina and experience required for public duties.
Only then might it be considered ready for a modest operational role... perhaps Coming In or Going Out of the Field at a Twelfth demonstration.

Most Lambeg drums require 50–60 additional years of advanced service before they are trusted with a full Twelfth demonstration. Great drums are not simply loud—they develop endurance, discipline and adaptability, learning to respond to different drumming styles while bringing out the very best in their players.
🤝 It is a partnership built over decades, sometimes spanning several generations, before drum and drummer finally reach their full potential together.
🔒 Naturally, our award-winning, patented training methods remain highly confidential. Without requiring every follower to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement, we regrettably cannot reveal more.
