𝗔 𝗟𝗘𝗧𝗧𝗘𝗥 𝗙𝗥𝗢𝗠 𝗖𝗔𝗣𝗧𝗜𝗩𝗜𝗧𝗬: 1921 Among the most remarkable aspects of the tragic case of RIC inspector Gilbert Potter case was the survival of his final correspondence.

Writing to his wife while a prisoner, Mr Potter described being treated well and asked for newspapers, ci******es and a little money. Above all, he expressed concern for the distress his capture had caused his family.

His words offered a rare glimpse into the human dimension of the conflict – a husband and father uncertain of his future but thinking first of those he loved.

The letter remains one of the most poignant personal documents to emerge from the War of Independence.
