Training and Business Support

We provide advice and support services to employers in the electrical contracting sector with apprentice recruitment and skills training needs. Part of our mission includes liaison with the careers service, post primary schools and other support agencies on behalf of the local industry. Constraints and shifts in local Government policy brought about an end to the org

anisations lengthy history in training apprentice electricians. Until 2016, the organisation had successfully recruited and trained over 5000 apprentice electricians in the local economy.

- AM2 Skills Test

We operate the only Achievement Measurement 2 Centre in Ireland under license from National Electrotechnical Training (NET). The AM2 test is compulsory for apprentices, adult trainees and upskilling workers who seek to gain industry recognised qualified status. The purpose of the AM2 is to ensure all qualifying installation electricians achieve a single standard that has been agreed by the employers in the industry as meeting their expectations from newly qualified personnel. The AM2 provides a reliable and trusted independent assessment of safe, high quality standards for the electrical installation industry and is highly valued by employers, who regard it as proof of competence for an electrician.

- Electrical Licence to Practice

Local employers, weary of the decline in standards brought about by sub-economic tendering, underwritten by the use of unqualified and under qualified workers, have become determined to reform the industry through a Licence to Practice system. In 2013, the organisation successfully developed and introduced an online electrical Licence to Practice system that connects the competency of individual electrical workers on a project by project basis by licence type. This appears in the form of a unique on-line workforce composition report providing the client with visibility, transparency and reporting tools that deters fraud and encourages improved contract performance. The LtP system is designed to increase selectivity towards the appointment of electrical contractors and enhance social procurement values the system ensures that only licenced electrical workers are employed on public sector contracts. Since its formal adoption by CPD in February 2016, the application of the system extends towards one billion GBP worth of public sector construction work.

💥Safety from Day One: TIS Provides Apprentices with Voltage Indicators 💥

Ensuring that safe isolation procedures are understood from the very start of an electrician’s career is essential to building strong, safety-conscious electricians. That’s why, ETT have provided all first-year apprentices with complimentary voltage indicators.

We would like to thank Test Instrument Solutions for their help in supporting this initiative. These tools compliment the fully funded safe isolation kits supplied by ESF, giving each apprentice the confidence and equipment they need to work safely and responsibly from day one.

Providing apprentices with their own voltage indicators reinforces the importance of correct testing procedures and personal responsibility in the workplace. Safe isolation is not just a classroom topic, it is a safety critical process that must become second nature. By placing the right tools in our apprentices’ hands early in their training, we are helping to embed a culture of safety that will stay with them throughout their careers.

Teaching safe isolation from the outset helps apprentices develop good habits, understand the real dangers of electricity, and gain the discipline to isolate, test, and verify circuits properly before any work begins. Nothing is more important than everyone going home safe at the end of the day.

Michael’s Story highlights the life-changing consequences that can arise from unsafe electrical working practices and reinforces the importance of effective safe isolation training and testing equipment for anyone working on or near electrical systems. Further information is available at .

Partnerships like this highlight the importance of training the next generation of electricians with safety at the heart of their learning, and we are grateful to TIS for supporting our safe isolation commitment.

We recently welcomed representatives from the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSENI), Martin Rafferty and Laura Hughes, for an engaging and informative visit focused on raising awareness of workplace health and safety among students.

The session aimed to give students a real-world understanding of the hazards they may encounter on-site as they progress into their chosen careers. Martin and Laura delivered practical insights into common risks, including working at height, manual handling, use of machinery, and the importance of personal protective equipment (PPE). Their approach was both informative and relatable, helping students connect classroom learning with real-life workplace scenarios.

A key highlight of the visit was the strong emphasis on the HSENI Workplace Health Campaign. The campaign encourages workers, particularly those entering construction and trade industries, to take ownership of their health as well as their safety. Topics such as mental wellbeing, occupational health risks, and long-term exposure to hazards like dust and noise were discussed, broadening students’ understanding beyond immediate physical dangers.

Students played an active role throughout the session, engaging in discussions, asking questions, and sharing their own experiences from workshops and placements. This interactive element made the visit especially impactful, as students were able to reflect on their own practices and consider how they can improve their approach to safety moving forward.

The visit concluded with the distribution of HSENI goodie bags, which were very well received by students. These packs included helpful resources and reminders about staying safe and healthy at work, reinforcing the key messages delivered during the session.

Overall, the visit from Martin and Laura was a valuable experience for everyone involved. It not only highlighted the importance of maintaining high health and safety standards but also empowered students to take responsibility for their own wellbeing as they continue to enter the workforce.

Supporting the Next Generation: Delivering Safe Isolation Lock-Off Kits for 2025 Apprentices!

We are proud to continue our commitment to electrical safety by delivering fully funded Safe Isolation Lock-Off Kits to the 2025 intake of first-year electrical apprentices. This year’s rollout has now been completed, ensuring new starters are equipped with the right tools from the very beginning of their careers.

🤝Building on a Strong Partnership

In partnership with Electrical Safety First, we have once again provided almost 600 Level 3 electrical installation apprentices with these essential kits at no cost. This ongoing collaboration reflects a shared focus on raising standards across the industry and making sure safety is built into everyday practice from the outset.

👷Addressing a Critical Safety Gap

This initiative builds on the findings of ETT’s Ending Shock Silence report, which highlighted gaps in the consistent use of proper safe isolation procedures—one of the most important protections against electric shock. By equipping apprentices with the correct tools from day one, we are taking a practical step to help close that gap.

👷Embedding a Culture of Safety

At ETT, our focus is to:

✔️ Embed best practice early in training
✔️ Support consistent use of safe isolation procedures
✔️ Give apprentices the confidence to prioritise safety throughout their careers

This approach helps ensure that safe isolation is not seen as optional, but as a standard part of the job.

❗Looking Ahead

As the initiative grows, so does our ambition to strengthen safety culture across the electrical industry. Supporting apprentices at the start of their careers helps turn good practice into lasting habits.

🤝 A Shared Commitment

Commenting on the initiative, ETT’s CEO said:

“We’re grateful to Electrical Safety First for their continued support. This partnership allows us to put the right tools in apprentices’ hands from day one. It’s a simple step, but it makes a real difference in helping build safe working habits that last throughout a career.”

🔦 Celebrating WS Mercer’s Support for ETT’s Apprentice Electricians 🔦

We were delighted to welcome our first-year apprentices back last week and to recognise the ongoing support of Walter S Mercer Ballymena. Through their contribution of essential tools, equipment, and materials, apprentices are able to begin their training with access to high-quality, industry-standard resources from day one. This early investment supports effective hands-on learning, improves skills development, and helps apprentices build confidence in a high-quality training environment.

For apprentices, receiving a comprehensive toolkit at the start of training removes a significant financial barrier and ensures consistency in practical learning. Access to the right tools early in their careers contributes directly to increased engagement and improved practical outcomes.

For ETT, partnerships like this, strengthen programme delivery by enhancing the quality of training provision without increasing costs to learners. As a small charity, ETT relies on industry collaboration to maintain high standards and accessibility. Support from industry partners like Walter S Mercer Ballymena enables ETT to provide opportunities, improve retention, and ensure training remains aligned with current industry expectations across Northern Ireland.

Last week, representatives from Walter S Mercer Ballymena presented ETT’s first-year electrical apprentices with complimentary toolkits to support their progression into the trade.

Ian Thomson, ETT Lecturer, said: “Ensuring that every apprentice receives a free toolkit in their first year is central to our goal of helping them feel valued and an important part of the profession. We are pleased to be working in partnership with WS Mercer, Ballymena, and are grateful for their support of our apprentices throughout their Level 3 apprenticeship.

Patrick Doyle, Manager at Walter S Mercer Ballymena, added:
“WS Mercer, Ballymena is proud to support the next generation of electricians in partnership with ETT. By providing apprentices with high-quality tools, they are able to gain hands-on practical skills from the very start of their training. Supporting this initiative represents an investment not only in individual career development but also in the long-term strength of the industry.”

Walter S Mercer Ballymena contribution is not just about tools, it’s about motivating the next generation of electricians and helping them reach their full potential 🙌
