An amazing poem by one of a kind Hugh Black - A Pages for Good volunteer 👏✨🤩

The “Pages for Good” venture and the Volunteer Team

Great books have always been a way of spending social time
They range from kiddies stories maybe fiction maybe crime
But what then happens to these books when folks have had their fun
They end up on a garage shelf when all is said and done

So how then did this venture start, I hear some people say
It was a light-bulb moment – these don’t happen every day
Just blame it on our manager – her great craft-minded brain
Her wee head flying round like some extremely speedy train

She said “Let's take these books instead of them just lying all around”
And wrap them up professionally and have them nicely bound
And all those books instead of lying wasting in a shed
We’ll package them and turn them into lovely gifts instead

Our lovely volunteers – the best you’ll get in any town
Meet in our Hub each Wednesday where you’ll never find a frown
For friendship, warmth and purpose – plus the banter and the craic
With tempting buns and tea and biscuits sitting at the back

The books are cleaned meticulously then covered front to back
A most accomplished finish – sure the team just have the knack
They’re bound with ribbon – buttoned – in a very classy way
With a label tied on tightly with three words – that’s all we’ll say

The three words are a mystery that volunteers don't know
The book – its name – they’re all inside – they’re not for us to show
So how then do the good folk know just what they’d like to buy
A neatly printed label on the packaged book we tie

With software called CHAT GPT – a very high-tech tool
We get some great examples from a multi-worded pool
We print three words on labels which we think that best describe
The type of book the volunteers have packaged up inside

So off they go to craft fairs and they sell within a flash
They make a lovely pressie – earning us much needed cash
We hope you’ll feel a part of us for buying helps us meet
A waste reduction ethos – and keeps reading still a treat ☺️

A huge thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to the conversation. Your insights and collaboration are helping to shape the support and services that older people need in the Mid and East Antrim area.
