Schoolhouse Dental Education and Awareness Camp - summer 2019 - dates tbc - 2 weeks in July /August

A dental orientated adventure in Sri Lanka for BDS, dental therapists & students

Schoolhouse has been running dental projects in India and Sri Lanka since 2012 and in 2019, will run a dental health promotion camp on Sri Lanka’s beautiful south.

You’ll stay as part of team (12 max) in the comfortable Schoolhouse bungalow where you’ll be well catered for by Alan & Cathy of Schoolhouse. You’ll visit schools, children’s homes and mothers groups to promote dental health, screen large numbers of teeth & create dental records. You’l learn about Sri Lanka’s dental care system and visit a variety of dental clinics, observe treatments and probably see unusual conditions. You’ll be supervised by an experienced Sri Lankan community dental professional.

Schoolhouse has expertise in training students to make their English available and in developing English teaching materials for a number of special purposes.

You’ll also explore this beautiful part of the island - swim, surf, snorkel, visit historic sites and temples and experience real cultural immersion.

Fundraising and full pre-departure support provided.

A dental orientated adventure in beautiful Sri Lanka for dental and dental therapy students and professionals. The main focus will be to promote dental health by:
* visiting schools, children’s homes and mother’s groups to deliver dental education in practical, memorable and effective ways
* screen large numbers of teeth and create dental records for each patient
* visit a variety of dental care settings to observe treatments and probably see some unusual conditions
* learn about the dental health care system and health promotion in Sri Lanka
* be supervised by a local Sri Lankan community dentist
* receive classes in speaking Sinhala, the local language and learn useful vocabulary
BDS students will also have the opportunity to visit a busy government hospital, where they can observe surgeries, daily dental clinics, ward rounds and may at the discretion of their supervisor, be able to carry out some treatments.
The placement is for 2 weeks and accommodation is in the comfortable Schoolhouse bungalow on Sri Lanka's beautiful south coast, close to some of the best beaches.
Alan and Cathy will be resident in the bungalow, with caretaker and cook, so students will be
well catered for and well looked after. Students can explore this beautiful part of the island, swim, surf, snorkel, visit historic sites and temples and experience real cultural immersion.
