BALLATER VICTORIA WEEK TO LAUNCH 4×4 SAFARI TO SUMMIT OF LOCHNAGAR 🏔️🛻

As part of this year’s Ballater Victoria Week celebrations, the committee are delighted to announce plans for what is already being described as the most talked‑about and most ambitious 4×4 Safari ever to happen: a bold, imaginative attempt to “climb” all 3792 ft of Lochnagar by vehicle.

The ascent, described as “logistically impossible, environmentally catastrophic, and very expensive given the cost of diesel” using a series of forgotten Victorian estate tracks, will take place on Sunday August 16th following the Duck Race on the Green.

Local expert and poet Alistair Cassie said when told of the plan, “Ye canna drive a car up Lochnagar..... No even wi diff‑lock”. However, BVW stalwart Athol Bowman disagrees, and plans to be one of the first up the mountain and has arranged for what appears to be the “prime summit parking spot,” normally reserved for wind, snow, and people who’ve spent four hours climbing and would quite like a sandwich.

Gordon Riddler, who has run previous 4x4 safaris, remains fully supportive of the project, and advises this year’s participants to ensure their folding table is tied down appropriately. H.M Sheridans are looking forward to catering for the event once again, however due to the new Cairngorms regulations for fires, they will be cooking using a new wind powered hog roaster.

With excitement building across the village, The Lochnagar 4×4 Safari is set to become one of the standout spectacles of Ballater Victoria Week 2026. Volunteers are already polishing bonnets, checking maps, and practising their summit‑selfie poses in anticipation of what promises to be a truly unforgettable adventure. Whether participants reach the top or just enjoy the thrill of trying, we are sure the bold, cheerful, and adventurous spirit will carry the day, giving many the chance to Be Amused.

Tell a friend to tell a friend…
Ballater Victoria Week 2026 is on! 🌞🎪🫧

We are pleased to confirm that BVW 2026 is officially happening from the 8th-16th August 2026 and look forward to another vibrant and engaging BVW, celebrating the very best of Ballater!

As we progress with planning, we’re also making a few positive changes behind the scenes. The committee format is evolving, with some roles being refreshed and certain tasks being outsourced to help things run more efficiently and smoothly. This shift allows us to focus more on what matters most - creating experiences for all to Be Amused.

We welcome new ideas and accompanying people with fresh perspectives who want to get involved. If you’ve got energy, creativity, or simply want to contribute in any way, the door is open 🚪🙌.

Community groups of Ballater and the surrounding area are especially encouraged to connect with us and use the event as an opportunity to fundraise, collaborate, and showcase the great work happening locally.

We’re really looking forward to BVW 2026, to seeing familiar faces and meeting new ones, and to what we hope will be brighter, more exciting days ahead. If you would like any information or would like to get involved, please message us here or email [email protected] 💌

Stay tuned for the line up of events, coming soon..!

Ballater Victoria Week held its Annual General Meeting earlier this month, where more than £3,000 raised during BVW 2025 was distributed to a number of local groups and community projects. The support and success of this year’s event made these contributions possible, so thanks to everyone who got involved, we were able to support:
Ballater Youth Football Club, ‘Notthat Athletic’ Over 30s Football Club, Ballater Winter Festival, Ballater Angling Association, BALLATER CHARITABLE CHIELS, Friends of Ballater School Parent Council, Ballater Little Masons, Cactus Book Club, Crathie Opportunity Holidays and Scottish Fire and Rescue Service Family Support Trust (chosen by Ballater Community Fire Station)

The AGM also provided an opportunity to look ahead to 2026. With several long-standing committee members stepping down, discussions focused on the future structure of the organising team. Although no immediate volunteers came forward to take on the vacant roles, there was clear enthusiasm within the room to ensure BVW continues. An Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) will be convened in January to begin planning for BVW 2026 or, if necessary, to consider dissolving the current committee.

As plans remain uncertain, the BVW team is appealing to the community for support. Anyone interested in helping to secure the future of BVW 2026 is encouraged to get in touch. Information on the roles and assistance required is provided at the end of the accompanying photos.
