Friends of Baldock Green Spaces Friends of Baldock Green Spaces: conserving and enhancing open spaces in Baldock for the benefit of

We meet the 2nd Sunday of every month at either Ivel Springs or Weston Hils - see events calendar for confirmation of location and planned activities. Established in 2004, we aim to conserve and enhance open spaces in Baldock by working in partnership with North Herts District Council and the Countryside Management Service. We involve local people in planning for and carrying out improvements to B

aldock’s open spaces (Weston Hills and River Ivel Springs), and take an active role in raising funds to support this work.

Next Sunday we will meet at Ivel Springs.

We are going to continue with adding protection to the young trees in the Rotary plantation.

Having just walked around the site this morning I note that a few of the paths have encroaching undergrowth and I'm sure other visitors would appreciate it if we cut it back.

We'll meet in the normal place, the allotment car park at 10am. Any late comers can make their way across to the plantation.

Our summer task program

Hoping all our followers have had a good easter.

Next Sunday we will be meeting at Weston Hills.
The main task will be to remove the scrub in the Northern Enclosure (Cow field) that has regrown over the last few years. This is to enable mowers to be used to keep the growth down where the cows haven't managed to 'keep up!' recently.
There will also be the opportunity to check paths and pick litter.

More details on the meeting arrangements are on our poster. Pinned post.

The Countryside Management Service (CMS) and North Herts Council are shaping a brand new Greenspace Action Plan (GAP) for Weston Hills, guiding how this beautiful landscape will be cared for from 2026–2031.

We’re now in the second stage of public engagement, and the draft plan is ready for your thoughts! Whether you walk there daily, visit occasionally, or simply care about protecting our green spaces – your voice truly matters.

Take a look at the draft GAP: https://www.north-herts.gov.uk/weston-hills

Comments will need to be sent to Caroline Crang, Countryside Management Service – [email protected] by 16 March 2026.

Let’s work together to keep Weston Hills thriving for wildlife, walkers, families and future generations.

Next Sunday we are at Ivel Springs for the first time in a while.
The aim is to build some protection from deer and rabbits for young trees. The Thursday group have started the process and have kindly left us some raw materials.
There will also be an opportunity to walk the site to collect litter and ensure the paths are clear.
Here's hoping for the mild weather we have had today.

More details are on the pinned FoBGS Spring 2026 Schedule poster

We'll meet at the normal place in the allotment car park at 10am.
It may well be busy with allotment holders getting ready for the new season so if you are able to walk or park elsewhere I'm sure they'd appreciate it.
I hope you are able to join us.

From the Countryside & Rights of Way Service:

🌿 How we manage cut materials on sensitive grassland sites

We tailor our approach to each site through the Greenspace Action Plan (GAP) process. Depending on the location and ecology, we may:

🔥 burn material (sometimes on raised platforms)
🌱 chip it
🪵 or create valuable dead‑wood habitat

Every decision considers site context, ecological sensitivity, seasonal timing, and the resources available from our staff and volunteers.

Our team stays up to date with best practice to ensure we’re caring for these landscapes responsibly and sustainably. 💚

Thanks to Countryside & Rights of Way Service Thursday volunteers for clearing the final piles of brash we failed to burn at our Feb task. We took a while to get the fire going with the wet ground conditions.
