CAST CHARACTER SUMMARY. BRASSED OFF
Happy Sunday. I thought you might like to read a little more about the characters in Brassed Off. these are the main cast members. All strong roles! This show is going to be gritty, with a little humour and romance sprinkled over it.
Shane
Shane is Danny’s grandson and Phil & Sandra’s son. His Mum and Dad are struggling to get by and they’re deep in debt. Shane is a realist and has some great moments of dry comedy as he watches their interaction. Shane loves his Grandad is his grandfathers favourite. He loves to follow the band.
Danny
Danny is band conductor and dedicated to keeping the band together despite the looming threat of the coal mine's closure. His passion for music & the band often clashes with the harsh realities faced by the miners.
Phil
Phil, Danny's son, is in a challenging position and his loyalties are torn between his family, his father and the pit. A very private man, his personal struggle illustrates the financial and emotional impact of the mine's closure. Phil breaks down emotionally in one of the shows most powerful scenes — dressed as a clown at a children’s party, he confesses his inability to provide for his family. His commitment to the band and his father highlights the personal stakes involved in the community's fight for survival.
Gloria
Gloria returns to her hometown with a dual purpose: to assess the viability of the coal mine and to reconnect with her past. She and Andy rekindle their teenage romance. Her character embodies the conflict between corporate interests and community ties.
Andy
As a miner and Gloria's love interest, Andy represents the struggles of the working class. His bitterness about the mine's closure and his relationship with Gloria add more emotional depth to the story.
Jim
Jim is a passionate, uncompromising miner married to Vera. He is fiercely loyal to the community and strongly against the pit closure. He is firstly loyal to the mining community and strongly against the pit closure.
Harry
Harry is a hard worker and an inseparable companion to Jim both down the pit and in the Grimley Colliery Brass Band. A loyal family man and a good miner through and through.
*Jim & Harry. The pair form a memorable double act. Much of the film's gritty northern humor comes from their banter, shared frustrations over the colliery, and attempts to keep playing in the band despite pressure from their wives Vera and Rita
Rita and Vera are strong women. Long suffering but loyal and supportive to their men and the pit. They ‘man’ the picket line every day and although they’d like their men to leave the band, they’re enthusiastic supporters when needed .
