After two consecutive months of Fellowcraft Freemasons being raised to the Sublime Degree of a Master Mason… we are doing it all over again this month at Roclyffe Lodge 5198.

This time, Bro Stuttard will be taking centre stage as the Brethren come together for a third time to conduct the ceremony in a way that only Bacup can.

(Some of us might even remember our lines this time! šŸ˜„)

The lodge is well and truly enjoying a revival, with fantastic attendance, great teamwork, and a real buzz around our meetings. It is wonderful to see so many Brethren stepping up, supporting one another, and helping candidates progress along their Masonic journey.

We also still have a queue of men eager to join us on a quest of personal growth, guided by the Masonic values of service to others, charity, and friendship.

If you would like to know more, please make contact.
You will never be asked to be a Freemason. The first move is in your hands.
As the expression says… ā€œTo be one, ask one.ā€

From strength to strength, and proud of it.

Roclyffe Lodge No. 5198 recently enjoyed a truly memorable evening, as Brethren gathered to witness the raising of Bro George White to the sublime degree of a Master Mason, a milestone made even more special by the strong sense of family, friendship, and fellowship present throughout the night.

The Lodge was delighted to welcome several guests, including members of the East Lancashire Level Club (ELLC), whose attendance added to the vibrant and supportive atmosphere. Their presence was a clear demonstration of the wider Light Blue family in action, coming together to encourage and celebrate the progress of a Brother on his Masonic journey.

Pride was understandably in abundance for the Junior Warden, Bro Olly White, who had the unique honour of seeing his son take this significant step. Father and son are pictured alongside WBro Lee Brown, who presided over an excellent ceremony. Conducted in true ā€œBacup Style,ā€ the working was delivered with precision, warmth, and that distinctive Roclyffe character that so many Brethren have come to admire.

The ceremony itself was a powerful reminder of the beauty and depth of Freemasonry, marking Bro George’s transition into the full rights and responsibilities of a Master Mason, and reinforcing the timeless values of Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth.

Following the meeting, attention naturally turned to the equally important business of fellowship. Masonic connections were expanded, old friendships renewed, and new ones forged over a hearty meal, all crowned by the legendary Bacup cheese board. Renowned far beyond the Lodge, it once again lived up to its reputation, ensuring that waistlines grew almost as much as the sense of camaraderie.

Roclyffe Lodge 5198 extends its congratulations to Bro George White on his raising and sincere thanks to all visitors who joined us for this special occasion. Evenings such as this perfectly capture the spirit of Freemasonry in Bacup, meaningful ritual, warm hospitality, and a shared enjoyment of good company.

After the meeting ends, something just as important begins… the social board. šŸ§€šŸ¤

For a lot of Freemasons, this is where the real magic happens. No ritual, no formalities, just good people, good food, and great conversation. At Roclyffe, the cheeseboard has become a bit of a legend, but it isn’t really about the cheese (even though it is excellent). It’s about sitting around a table with people from all walks of life, sharing stories, having a laugh, and enjoying each other’s company.

Freemasonry is often talked about in terms of symbolism, history, and tradition, but one of its true cornerstones is friendship. The simple act of breaking bread together builds bonds. It turns acquaintances into friends, and friends into brothers.

The social board reminds us that Freemasonry isn’t just something you do, it’s something you belong to. A place where you’re welcomed, listened to, and valued. Where conversations range from the meaningful to the completely daft, and both are equally important.

So yes, we love our Roclyffe cheeseboard. But what we really love is the fellowship around it. Because at its heart, Freemasonry is about good people, in good company, building lasting friendships.

Robbie Burns.
Poet.
Radical.
Freemason.

Robert Burns didn’t become a Freemason for secrecy, power, or status.

He joined because Freemasonry stood for things he already believed in.
Equality. Friendship. Education. Charity.
A place where a farmer could stand equal to a laird.

Burns was initiated in 1781 and remained an active Mason throughout his life.
The Lodge gave him community, support, and a platform at a time when his ideas about equality and human dignity were not always popular.

Many of his poems and songs echo Masonic values.
Brotherhood beyond class.
Respect for all people.
The idea that a person’s worth comes from their character, not their title.

He didn’t leave behind hidden codes or secret instructions.
He left something far more powerful.

Words that still bring people together.
Songs still sung across the world.
A legacy rooted in compassion, humanity, and unity.

Burns reminds us that Freemasonry at its best isn’t about mystery.
It’s about making good people better and leaving the world a little fairer than we found it.

šŸ”„ A poet for the people. A Mason for a reason. šŸ”„

You won’t often see this kind of story make the headlines, but Masonic charity is quietly changing lives every single day.
Here at Roclyffe Lodge we’re proud to play our part in supporting good causes locally and nationally, helping children, young people and vulnerable older people right across the country.
Quietly done, but with big impact. šŸ‘‡

We are tackling some of society’s most important issues through grants to charities – both local and national – and partnerships with leading organisations in the sector. This is made possible thanks to the generosity of Freemasons and their families and we are dedicated to supporting disadvantaged children and young people, as well as vulnerable older people, in England and Wales.

There’s a real buzz (and a few nervous glances) around Roclyffe Lodge No. 5198 at the minute…

Later this month we’ll be raising one of our brethren to the rank of Master Mason a milestone moment in his Masonic journey.

It’ll also be a big night for several of our officers the first time many of them have taken part in this ceremony from their new seats in lodge. There’s plenty of practice, muttering, and the odd ā€œwho’s saying that bit again?ā€ echoing around Bacup right now!

This will be the first of three raising ceremonies planned this year, thanks to a welcome influx of new and younger brethren joining Freemasonry here in Bacup bringing fresh energy and enthusiasm into the lodge.

The Master Mason’s apron, shown here, is rich with centuries of symbolism representing learning, integrity, and the journey of personal improvement that lies at the heart of our Craft.

We’re always delighted to welcome visiting brethren to join us for these special evenings it’s one of the finest traditions in Freemasonry, strengthening the bonds of friendship between lodges near and far.

It’s shaping up to be a memorable night for everyone involved.

We will remember them. 🌺

If you’ve ever fancied joining a group of good-humoured blokes who enjoy tradition, charity, and the odd brew, maybe it’s time to stop believing the conspiracies… and come see what really happens behind the door.

Spoiler: It’s mainly laughter, friendship and trying to find where the Tyler’s put the teabags again.
