Ayr Sea Cadets & Royal Marines Cadets Welcome to Ayr Sea Cadets - TS Mountbatten Traditionally old seafarers provided training while local businessmen funded the unit building.

Established in 1856 the Sea Cadets were created by communities wanting to give young people instruction on a naval theme. Today, 14,000 young people based in 400 units in towns, cities and ports across the UK are challenging themselves and developing new skills, like sailing, boating and rock climbing - supported by 9,000 volunteers.

💙 Celebrating Our Cadets, Our Volunteers and 85 Years of Ayr Sea Cadets! 💙

As National Cadet Week comes to a close, we want to take a moment to reflect on what makes Ayr Sea Cadets & Royal Marines Cadets – TS Mountbatten such a special place to be.

🌟 Firstly, to our incredible cadets – we are so proud of you!

Throughout this week, we've shared just a small glimpse of the amazing experiences, opportunities and achievements of our young people. From sailing, powerboating and adventurous training to leadership, teamwork, qualifications and lifelong friendships, our cadets continue to inspire us with their enthusiasm, determination and willingness to challenge themselves.

Watching young people grow in confidence, develop new skills, overcome challenges and achieve things they never thought possible is what makes everything we do worthwhile. Every single one of our cadets has something to be proud of, and we couldn't be prouder of them! 👏

Behind every successful cadet is a team of dedicated volunteers who give up countless evenings, weekends and hours of their own time to provide these opportunities.

🎉 2026 – A VERY SPECIAL YEAR FOR TS MOUNTBATTEN! 🎉

This year marks an incredible 85 years of Ayr Sea Cadets, and what a year it has been!

For 85 years, our unit has been helping young people develop confidence, discipline, leadership, friendships and skills for life. Generations of cadets have passed through our doors, many going on to successful careers in the Armed Forces and civilian life, taking with them memories and friendships that last a lifetime.

This anniversary year has also brought some truly historic milestones for our unit.

🏅 Being granted the Freedom of the Burgh – an extraordinary honour recognising our unit's long-standing connection with Ayr and our contribution to the local community.

🚩 Receiving our very first Colour – a proud and significant moment in the history of TS Mountbatten, representing our heritage, dedication and the generations of cadets and volunteers who have helped shape our unit.

These are achievements that will become part of our history and be remembered for generations to come.

As we celebrate our 85th anniversary, we remember those who came before us, celebrate those who are part of our unit today and look forward to an exciting future for the next generation of cadets.

🌟 From Shy Beginner to Confident Leader – Meet Leading Cadet Brown! 🌟

As part of National Cadet Week, we're continuing to hear from our cadets about their experiences, achievements and what being part of Sea Cadets means to them.

Today, we're hearing from Leading Cadet Logan Brown, who shares how four years at Ayr Sea Cadets have helped him grow in confidence, develop leadership skills, gain qualifications and make lasting friendships.

From starting out as a shy young person at Annbank Village Hall to becoming a Leading Cadet, Logan's journey shows just how much young people can achieve when they're given the opportunity to challenge themselves and try something new.

Here's Logan's story in his own words. 👇

⚓ Leading Cadet Brown

"I joined Sea Cadets 4 years ago when we were still at Annbank Village Hall. I joined as a shy person looking for something to keep me busy but i have done more than that during my time at cadets. Cadets has given me something to do on a Tuesday night and weekends when we go away to different courses to earn qualifications that we can use in real life situations and scenarios.

My favourite thing during cadets has been going out on the water completing different stages of my powerboating qualification which i was lucky enough to go down to Newcastle to complete. I also enjoyed meeting new people at the different courses i have been on as it allows you to talk to people and have a laugh during your time away.

I have really enjoyed my time as a Leading cadet and in the sea cadets as it allows you to teach classes with confidence as this is one of the things you work on during the Leading Cadet board.

Being a Leading Cadet and part of the Sea Cadets has been an experience I'll never forget, ive loved every moment. The different challenges and opportunities that cadets have brung has been one of a kind. Never when i first joined did i think that i would achieve this much but 4 years later i wouldn't change anything and couldn't be happier with myself from where i was when i started to where i am today."

⚓ Our Cadets, Their Experiences! ⚓

Throughout National Cadet Week, we've been hearing directly from our cadets about their experiences, achievements and what being part of Sea Cadets and Royal Marines Cadets means to them.

Today we're hearing from Lance Corporal Aitken, who shares his journey from Junior Sea Cadet to Royal Marines Cadet and his plans to become an adult volunteer! 💙

🎤 Over to LCpl Aitken!

I am Lance Corporal Aitken, I have been attending Ayr Sea and Royal Marines cadets for the past nearly 8 years. I first started as a junior cadet at the age of 10 and completed the syllabus. I then moved up to senior sea cadets and achieved the rank of ordinary cadet, then when the Ayr Royal Marines Cadets detachment opened, I decided to transfer across. Through them I have achieved the rank of Lance Corporal and went on various courses such as intermediate first aid, a 4-day offshore voyage on TS Jack Petchy and achieved an advanced air r***e qualification.

Through this I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as a cadet, and I am now working through the cadet to volunteer pathway as I am close to ageing out with cadets but will continue my cadet pathway as a cadet forces adult volunteer (CFAV). Through this I hope I will make as big of an impact on the other cadets lives as so many staff have done in mine.

🌟 Leading Hand Kieran Nicholson RNR 🌟

This National Cadet Week, we're introducing another member of our fantastic volunteer team at TS Mountbatten!

From Sea Cadet to Royal Naval Reservist – Kieran's Journey! 🇬🇧⚓

"I joined Sea Cadets when I was just 10 years old, initially because I wanted to try kayaking. Little did I know that I would enjoy everything else so much that I'd still be involved all these years later!

Being part of Sea Cadets gave me so many valuable life skills, helped build my confidence and played a huge part in shaping the person I am today.

During my time as a cadet, I had some incredible opportunities and experiences that I'll never forget. One of the highlights was sailing aboard TS Royalist from Poland to London on the return leg of the Tall Ships Race. I also earned my Bronze Wings through the Cadet Aviation Course, giving me the chance to experience another exciting side of cadet life.

My experiences with Sea Cadets also inspired me to take the next step and join the Royal Naval Reserve, where I have now proudly served for eight years and reached the rank of Leading Hand.

One of my biggest career highlights was being mobilised for a year-long deployment aboard HMS Tamar in the Indo-Pacific region. This incredible opportunity allowed me to travel extensively throughout Australia and Asia, experiencing different countries, cultures and life at sea.

I'm now working towards gaining my instructor qualifications, allowing me to continue developing my skills and passing on my knowledge and experience to others."

⚓ MEET THE TEAM – NATIONAL CADET WEEK ⚓

Petty Officer Ciara Meehan

I joined Sea Cadet when I was 13 after watching the unit’s RNP when my brother was a junior cadet. I was really interested in huge range of activities on offer and it seemed like something different so I went along to try it out.

Over the next 6 years as a cadet, I had experiences and went places I never would have imagined: I sailed on T.S Royalist from London to Sweden, I earned my Gold Wings on the Cadet Naval Aviation Course and marched through London on Trafalgar Day.

Whilst these huge events are the highlights of my time as a cadet, it was the ‘small’ moments in the unit that really shaped my time and ultimately who I am now. In progressing through the ranks to become a Petty Officer Cadet, I gained confidence in working with others, in leadership and in communication and learned how to pass on my knowledge in teaching classes. I also made some fantastic connections and great friendships that are still going strong 11 years later!

All of these skills and qualities that I developed were hugely helpful as I went to University to study French and English Literature. This degree led me to moving to France for a few years as a teacher - a passion that was born from Sea Cadet.

Now back in Scotland, I am currently training as a Primary School Teacher and I am excited to bring the things I have learnt in the corps into the classroom - and vice versa!

🌟 MEET THE TEAM 🌟

Sgt. Teagan Blakeley – Royal Marines Cadets

I joined the Royal Marines Cadets in 2021 at 15, after watching the Mountbatten Festival of Music, and became a Cadet Force Adult Volunteer (CFAV) when I turned 18.

Through cadets, I have developed valuable life skills such as adaptability and self-discipline, alongside qualifications including First Aid at Work. These skills continue to support me in my role as a Graduate Apprentice in Early Learning and Childcare.

Cadets have also given me opportunities to try new activities, including sailing and shooting. My favourite has been drill, which has taught me self-discipline and high standards, leading me to complete my Drill Leader (DL) qualification last year. I have also made friends from across the UK.

Becoming a CFAV was an easy decision, as I wanted to give future cadets the same positive experiences and opportunities that CFAVs gave me.

Why did I join the Sea Cadets?

My connection with the Sea Cadets actually goes back around 35 years, when I was a cadet myself. I have many great memories from my time as a cadet, and when I had children of my own, I wanted them to have the opportunity to enjoy some of those same experiences – learning new skills, taking on challenges, making friends and, most importantly, building confidence.

I was also looking for a worthwhile hobby and something completely different from my working life. Volunteering with the Sea Cadets gave me the perfect opportunity to have that outlet while also giving something back to my local community.

In my day job, I am a Controls Engineer working in the water industry, where I manage a team of 16 engineers. My career has given me strong leadership, communication and problem-solving skills, which I can bring into my role with the Sea Cadets.

As Junior Training Officer, I have the opportunity to work with some of our youngest cadets at the very beginning of their Sea Cadet journey. It’s incredibly rewarding to help them learn new skills, try new activities and grow in confidence as they prepare to progress through the unit.

At the same time, volunteering is very much a learning experience for me too. There are always new skills to develop, new challenges to take on and opportunities to learn from the other volunteers and cadets.

For me, being part of the Sea Cadets is about giving something back, sharing my experience and helping the next generation create some fantastic memories of their own – just as I did all those years ago. ⚓

⚓ National Cadet Week – Meet Petty Officer Jackie McAdam - Unit Training Officer ⚓

I’ve been part of Sea Cadets for 9 years and 10 months, although my Sea Cadet journey actually started a little earlier when my son joined as a Junior Cadet. Just over a year later, I decided to get involved myself.

I originally joined because the unit needed some extra help — and, if I’m being truthful, it looked like a lot of fun! I started out helping with some of the admin, but it wasn’t long before I became Junior Training Officer, and today I’m proud to hold the position of Unit Training Officer and also gained my Paddlesport Instructor last year.

Nearly 10 years later, I certainly haven’t looked back.

One of the things I enjoy most about volunteering is teaching our cadets new skills and watching them grow. Seeing a young person develop in confidence, become more independent, take on challenges they never thought they could and grow into a capable young adult is incredibly rewarding.

There are always plenty of opportunities to get involved and try something new too. One of my favourite activities is paddleboarding — any excuse to get out on the water! 🏄‍♀️🌊

One of my most memorable experiences was a District trip to HMS Raleigh. It gave me a fascinating insight into the training and experiences my own son went through when he joined the Royal Navy just over two years ago. Having enjoyed his years with Sea Cadets so much, seeing him go on to make a career in the Royal Navy made that visit particularly special for me.

I might have joined Sea Cadets simply because they needed a helping hand, but almost 10 years later it has become so much more than that. I’ve made some brilliant memories, learned plenty myself and, most importantly, had the privilege of helping young people discover just how much they are capable of.
