To enrich the earth through knowledge

The core mission of the West of Scotland Agricultural College, a lovely piece of history lying around our potting shed. In need of a little TLC if anyone would be up to the task?
We're currently getting the glasshouses surveyed as part of retaining and bringing back the Ayrshire history of River Garden and we think this piece from around 1949, should be part of the story.

The Horned Cow: This represents the world-famous Ayrshire dairy cattle breed. Developed right in County Ayr, these hardy, red-and-white cows with distinctive lyre-shaped horns revolutionised dairy farming in Scotland.

The Ram (Sheep): This represents the livestock and hill farming sectors of western Scotland, particularly reflecting the regional importance of sheep farming and wool production.

The Two Lions and a Fish: This imagery is drawn directly from the historic civic heraldry of the Royal Burgh of Ayr. The historical seal of Ayr prominently features a salmon flanked by two lions, paying homage to Ayr's maritime trade, fishing heritage, and its status as a royal borough secured under the Scottish Crown.

The Hay Bales (Garbs): In heraldry, wheat sheaves or hay bales are called "garbs". They are a classic symbol of arable farming, land fertility, a successful harvest, and the science of agronomy.

The Five-Leaf Clover: While standard clovers are three-leafed (shamrocks), the use of a multi-leafed legume or clover variation in agricultural coats of arms symbolises exceptional luck, the science of grassland management, and pioneering crop rotation. Legumes like clover are crucial in agriculture for fixing nitrogen in the soil to naturally "enrich the earth."

🎖💪🛟🏰🦭 She did it! On Saturday Chantal managed to complete her swim from Wee Cumbrae Castle to Portencross Castle in just over 2 hours. She was supported by the whole River Garden community - staff, residents, volunteers, and friends and family (and also some dolphins!). It's not too late to show your support for her efforts with a wee donation to her here: https://www.justgiving.com/page/chantal-mcfeely-6?utm_medium=FR&utm_source=CL 🎖💪🛟🏰🦭

Look at all of these gorgeous roses in our memorial rose garden - we've got almost every colour of the rainbow! Every one of these roses was planted to commemorate someone who is special to a member of the River Garden community. We've got 15 spots left in our memorial rose garden - if you'd like to sponsor a rose for £30 in honour of a loved one, or a special event, email [email protected] to arrange.

Ever wondered what’s REALLY inside that cheap supermarket jar of honey?

Recent investigations into the UK honey market have uncovered some shocking facts about mass-produced, low-cost honey sitting on superstore shelves:

Massive Fake Honey Scandal: In independent testing reported by The Observer, 24 out of 25 own-label supermarket honeys failed authenticity tests, showing signs of being adulterated with cheap sugar syrups. In a separate European Commission investigation, 100% of UK-sourced test samples failed.

Heavily Reliant on Foreign Imports: 77% of all honey imported into the UK comes directly from China, where industrial-scale production often blends real honey with cheap rice, wheat, or sugar beet syrups to boost volume.

Anonymously Blended: Almost all supermarket honey is labeled simply as a "Blend of non-EU honeys." The honey from thousands of hives across multiple continents is processed together, making it impossible to trace the origin or identify a single source.

Testing Loopholes Keep Prices Artificially Low: The UK’s wholesale honey import prices are drastically lower than in Europe. Fraudulent producers use advanced sugar syrups that easily bypass standard UK regulatory tests, flooding shelves with £1.50 jars that genuine beekeepers simply cannot compete with.

Stripped of Goodness: Mass-produced honey is heavily heated (pasteurised) and ultra-filtered. This strips out natural pollen, beneficial enzymes, and rich flavours, leaving behind little more than liquid sugar with no smell or honey taste.

Choose Real, Local Honey: When you buy local honey, you get 100% pure, raw, single-origin honey—crafted directly by local bees and preserved with all its natural health benefits, enzymes, and distinct seasonal flavours intact.

Support local beekeepers and know exactly where your food comes from! 💛

If you were at River Garden this weekend, you might have noticed a very special visitor up near the residents' rec room. Staff member Sean brought his gorgeous 12-week-old goshawk, Zeus, in to show the residents and teach us all a bit about these majestic birds of prey. These photos don't do justice to how absolutely beautiful Zeus is. Thanks for bringing him in, Sean! We're excited to be able to watch Zeus grow up.
