Ayr Housing Aid who do amazing work in our community are celebrating a massive milestone today, Congratulations 🎉

🎉 40 years ago on this very day 28.5.1986 - Ayr Housing Aid Centre became a registered charity

In the mid 80’s a group of local people were discussing homelessness and housing issues in the then Kyle and Carrick area and what could be done. Frustrated at the lack of affordable accommodation and poor conditions vulnerable people were living in with no-where to turn to for help. At this point in the 80s it was common for people to be living in bedsits with poor conditions and disrepair with ejections taking place with little or no notice. This conversation prompted these pioneers to do something about it - they took direct action.

Inspired by a Shelter Scotland conference in Ayr Town Hall this group of interested people came together to form the Independent Housing Aid Centre - AHAC. The group concluded that if a person is threatened with homelessness could access free, independent advice and support, then that homelessness could be prevented and work could be done to link them in with more suitable accommodation and ensure they were claiming their entitlements and enforce their rights. By providing access to social justice, information, advice and support people would not only have the crisis averted but would be able to move forward with their lives, back into work and thrive once more.

Today we give special thanks to those early founding Volunteers - Ian Hughes, Brenda Campbell, Olga Clayton, Alice O’Flynn, Bill Longdon and Raymond Brennan

Special thanks to local organisations who supported us – Kyle & Carrick District Council, Strathclyde Regional Council, South Ayrshire Women's Aid, Shelter Scotland, The Salvation Army, Barnardo’s and local Churches Groups.

AHAC celebrate our 40th Birthday today and will be sharing some stories, pictures and information about the last 4 decades over the coming year. Watch this space for more info….

📣 Update: SSAFA group now running fortnightly over summer

A quick update for everyone who’s been coming along - and for anyone thinking about joining.

Over the summer, the SSAFA group will move from weekly sessions to a fortnightly schedule at the Wallacetown Hub.

They’ll still be with us on Wednesday afternoons from 1pm, just every second week instead of weekly.

The group is still very much open to veterans, serving personnel, and families from across Ayr and beyond. It’s a great space to meet others, get support, and stay connected with the local armed forces community.

If you know someone who would benefit, please keep encouraging them to come along, the more people who join in, the stronger the group becomes.

📜 Auld Streets of Wallacetown💜 – Ayr United FC Special⚫️⚪️

A special one this time, looking back at the early homes of Ayr United and the huge place football still holds in the heart of the town.

The first photo takes us back to Beresford Park in 1927. Opened in 1884, Ayr FC played there before moving to Somerset Park in 1888. Ayr Parkhouse later moved in, and in 1910 the two clubs merged to form Ayr United (still the only merger of two Scottish League clubs in history). The new club played at Somerset Park while the reserves continued at Beresford Park. Looking closely at the aerial shot, it even appears sheep were being used to keep the grass short.

Beresford Park was eventually sold in the 1930s, the ground now hosts the Astoria cinema.

The next two aerial photos show Somerset Park in the 1950s already looking recognisable, although with only one stand visible at the time. Surrounded by railway lines, factories and rows of houses, the ground sat right in the middle of everyday Ayr life.

More than a football club, Ayr United has always been a big part of the local community and a well known view from the streets of Wallacetown. Generations of families have passed through the turnstiles, followed the Honest Men home and away, and made Somerset Park part of life in Ayr for well over a century.
