Aylesbury’s Sri Lankan community brought colour, culture and compassion to the town on Vesak Day, hosting a free food stall and a vibrant evening of celebrations that drew over 600 residents from across the area.
The event was honoured by the presence of the Mayor of Aylesbury, the former Mayor, and several local councillors, who joined families and community members in marking this important Buddhist festival.
At the heart of the celebration was the spirit of generosity. Volunteers prepared and served a wide range of traditional Sri Lankan dishes, offered freely to all attendees as part of the Vesak tradition of giving and goodwill.
One of the most striking features of the evening was the stunning display of more than 50 handmade lanterns, lovingly crafted by children from across Aylesbury. Their creativity lit up the venue, symbolising the light of wisdom and hope that Vesak represents. Two large ceremonial lanterns were also showcased, adding to the beauty and atmosphere of the celebration.
A traditional pandol a decorative illuminated structure stood proudly at the event, illustrating a story from the life of Lord Buddha. Many visitors paused to admire the artwork and learn more about the teachings it represented.
The highlight for many was the heartfelt performance by over 40 children, who sang Buddhist devotional songs to mark the occasion. Their voices brought a sense of peace and unity to the gathering, reminding everyone of the values of kindness, mindfulness and community.
The Sri Lankan community expressed their gratitude to the town for its continued support and emphasised their commitment to sharing culture, friendship and service with the wider Aylesbury community.
