Axminster Bell Ringers

Axminster Bell Ringers Bell Ringers of the Minster Church of St Mary the Virgin, Axminster, Devon, England. The sound of bells ringing is deeply rooted in British culture.

Almost everyone in Britain lives within hearing range of bells. Axminsters Church has a beautiful ring of bells and a small friendly band of ringers who are striving to keep this tradition alive, but we need help. If you would like to help to keep the bells ringing out for the people of Axminster then you would be very welcome to join our band and experience the fascinating world of church bell ringing....

Happy New Year from Axminster Bell Ringers.
The building work currently being undertaken in the Minster has blocked access to the tower, so there won’t be any bell ringing at the Minster until later in the year. We hope to be back by Easter.

On Saturday 7th Dec from 10am, we will ring our Traditional Advent Peal to herald the arrival of the Christmas Season to Axminster. This year we attempt a Quarter Peal which, as the name suggests, lasts a quarter of the length of a full peal, about 50 minutes on our bells.
We do hope that you enjoy.

How fast is the tower?
An odd expression that a Bell Ringer may ask about a ring of bells.
The question refers to the ‘Peal Speed’, the time it takes to ring a Peal on the bells.

A Peal consisting of 5040 chimes of each bell takes between 3 and 4 hours to complete depending on the speed of the tower. The bells have a natural speed at which they are comfortable to ring. It is possible to ring them faster or ‘Push them along’ but this takes much more effort. Slowing them down also makes them much harder work. Axminster bells are surprisingly quick for a heavyish ring of 10 with a Peal speed of just over 3 hours.

On Saturday (7th Dec 10am) Axminster will enjoy our annual Christmas Peal, though this year we have opted to ring a 1/4 peal instead, taking around 50 minutes and allowing us to enjoy our Post Peal Pie & Pint earlier.

The Colyton Christmas Peal takes place today (30th Nov at 10am) and despite having 8 lighter bells their Peal Speed is around 3h 20m. We wish them the best of luck with their peal attempt.

From 6:30 this evening we will perform a Quarter Peal of Grandsire Triples for the Inauguration and Licencsing of Rev’d Leisa. This will be rung on our heavy 8 bells, the 1344 changes will take around 50 minutes. To achieve this we will be joined by ringers from across East Devon and West Dorset.

Tomorrow will be the first time in many weeks that we are able to raise a band of at least 6 ringers for service ringing at the Minster. Having lost a few people due to relocating it is becoming increasingly difficult. If you have any interest in keeping this tradition going then please get in touch.

This evening we have a band of ringers visiting from Wimbourne Minster to ring our bells from 5:30 - 6:30pm.
