A survey by the NFCC found that retained firefighters feel "second class" to wholetime colleagues, with some feeling ignored or discriminated against.

The culture across services must change to respect all firefighters, regardless of contract type. The NFCC recommends a 'one workforce' campaign to break down the two-tier system and fostering a partnership culture, by normalising joint exercises.

The national alert sent out on Friday has sparked conversations about wildfires across the UK.

However, there's still not enough being done by Government to ensure firefighters and the public are properly protected.

Firefighters have responded to 185 wildfires in the first 10 days of August alone, according to the latest NFCC Press Release.

With the fifth heatwave of the summer upon us, we've already exceeded the previous two busiest years for wildfire activity on record between 1 January and 10 August.

However, many fire services are under or improperly equipped to deal with wildfires and the rising level of incidents. This mounting pressure on fire services will only worsen with climate change.

We're calling on all fire services to include wildfires as a key hazard in their risk management plans, and on Government to ensure services have the funding for adequate training and kit.

Fire Chiefs are warning that a fifth heatwave this summer is adding further pressure on fire and rescue services, as firefighters continue to respond to exceptionally high levels of wildfire activity.

For the last 3 and a half weeks, our Scotland FRSA reps have been at the Cairngorms wildfire almost every day, on top of their normal incidents.

The scale of this wildfire has been huge, with around 25 square kilometres of moorland and forest affected.

We've been able to talk to firefighters about what's working in the response and what isn't. We've heard the good and the bad, and we'll be taking those experiences and lessons to a national debrief, hopefully very soon.

Firefighters on the ground deserve to be properly heard, and we'll always play our part in making sure they are.

Today, we attended the Kent Fire Authority meeting, where the authority voted against sending proposed station closures to public consultation.

Throughout this process, we’ve engaged with the service and authority to raise our members’ concerns and helped successful remove Grain from these proposals.

We welcome this outcome and look forward to working with our members, the service and the authority to strengthen KFRS now and into the future.
