The flu virus changes every year. If you’re over 65, even if you had the vaccine last year, you need to get it again to keep protected. Contact your GP practice or local pharmacy.

Most new parents feel tearful and overwhelmed around day 3 to 5 after the birth.
This is known as the baby blues and caused by the hormonal crash after delivery.

Now this can be a difficult time but it usually passes within the first two weeks.
Postnatal depression is different because it doesn’t pass.

It starts any time in the first year and it stays or gets worse. You might feel persistently low, lose interest in things you used to care about, struggle to sleep even when the baby sleeps, or feel like you are failing when everyone around you seems to be managing.

It affects around 1 in 10 mothers. It affects fathers too, though it often looks more like irritability, withdrawal, or numbness than sadness.

Postnatal depression is treatable through talking therapies and sometimes medication.

Your GP can refer you, or you can self-refer to NHS Talking Therapies directly without needing an appointment.

If you’re experiencing confusion, hallucinations, or extreme mood changes that feel out of character, call 999 or go to A&E.
