This Hoarding Awareness Week, what is the most important thing to remember?

Behind every situation is a person with experiences, emotions, and reasons that matter.

When we focus only on the environment, we risk missing whatโ€™s really going on. When we focus on the person, we create the opportunity for real change.

See the person, not the hoard.

How can we make a difference to someone who needs support with hoarding behaviour?

What helps most is:
โ€ข Building a consistent, trusting relationship.
โ€ข Being non-judgemental.
โ€ข Working collaboratively.
โ€ข Setting small, realistic goals.
โ€ข Progress is often slow and not always linear, and thatโ€™s okay.

Relationship-based support leads to lasting and sustainable change.

It's Hoarding Awareness Week - and one common question is 'do people choose to live like this?'

It is closely linked to mental health, and often linked to experiences such as trauma, loss, or grief.

A helpful shift in thinking is:
โ€ข Not โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong with this person?โ€
โ€ข But โ€œWhat has happened to this person?โ€

Understanding reduces judgement and improves support.

A question we are often asked about hoarding.... Why don't people just throw things away?

Removing items without the personโ€™s involvement can cause significant distress and trauma. In many cases, it leads to belongings building up again, sometimes more quickly than before.

What helps instead:
โ€ข Building trust.
โ€ข Working at the personโ€™s pace.
โ€ข Making small, agreed steps.

Clearing a space isnโ€™t the same as supporting a person.

This week is Hoarding Awareness Week 2026. All week we will be answering questions to help everyone understand hoarding and help reduce the stigma around it.

Itโ€™s important to understand:
โ€ข Itโ€™s not about mess or clutter.
โ€ข Itโ€™s about emotional attachment, safety, and life experiences.
Over time, it can begin to affect:
โ€ข The functionality of someone's home.
โ€ข Safety within their living environment.
โ€ข Limited space to carry out everyday activities or do things they enjoy at home.

For many people, their belongings serve a purpose such as providing comfort, a sense of identity, or protection.
