This Hoarding Awareness Week, what is the most important thing to remember?

Behind every situation is a person with experiences, emotions, and reasons that matter.

When we focus only on the environment, we risk missing what’s really going on. When we focus on the person, we create the opportunity for real change.

See the person, not the hoard.

How can we make a difference to someone who needs support with hoarding behaviour?

What helps most is:
• Building a consistent, trusting relationship.
• Being non-judgemental.
• Working collaboratively.
• Setting small, realistic goals.
• Progress is often slow and not always linear, and that’s okay.

Relationship-based support leads to lasting and sustainable change.

It's Hoarding Awareness Week - and one common question is 'do people choose to live like this?'

It is closely linked to mental health, and often linked to experiences such as trauma, loss, or grief.

A helpful shift in thinking is:
• Not “What’s wrong with this person?”
• But “What has happened to this person?”

Understanding reduces judgement and improves support.

A question we are often asked about hoarding.... Why don't people just throw things away?

Removing items without the person’s involvement can cause significant distress and trauma. In many cases, it leads to belongings building up again, sometimes more quickly than before.

What helps instead:
• Building trust.
• Working at the person’s pace.
• Making small, agreed steps.

Clearing a space isn’t the same as supporting a person.

This week is Hoarding Awareness Week 2026. All week we will be answering questions to help everyone understand hoarding and help reduce the stigma around it.

It’s important to understand:
• It’s not about mess or clutter.
• It’s about emotional attachment, safety, and life experiences.
Over time, it can begin to affect:
• The functionality of someone's home.
• Safety within their living environment.
• Limited space to carry out everyday activities or do things they enjoy at home.

For many people, their belongings serve a purpose such as providing comfort, a sense of identity, or protection.
