a high nutritional value and can be processed for use as animal feed. Something that was previously treated as a waste can become a valued resource. Other waste food is taken to a local Anaerobic Digestion (AD) plant. At the AD plant all the packaging waste is separated from the food waste and sent to an energy recovery plant. Microorganisms break down
the produce and food waste material, generating ‘green’ gas which is
used to make electricity or is injected into the gas grid network. Managing food waste through AD helps us progress towards a circular economy by creating energy and digestate, a biofertiliser. The biofertiliser is used by farmers to add nutrients back to the soil and grow more food.
