Greetings Friends and Family of Crops Not Shops.

First and foremost, we want to say the biggest thank you to everyone for all the years of support, love, kindness and hope for the work we have been doing for the new earth, the regeneration of mumma earth and for this mission going forward in a good way.

Thank you isn't enough but we really do appreciate all the energy, love and support.

We have been off social media for over a month as we needed to reset and regroup as its been madness since deciding to move from the Picadea Peak Farm project in Ashcott to Sussex to join forces with My Little Farm for the progress of the Sovereign Village mission there.

We moved in October last year, because our mission is, and always will be, to set up projects, and to move on, when the time is right, to work with landowners in the best way possible. (For all the lessons) It was amazing and beautiful in Ashcott but it was time for Crops to explore different paths going forward. So we joined My Little Farm for a short while.

We thought we were moving onto a 100 plus acre site to build the village, but unfortunately that took longer than we thought. It became very hard over winter with Crops having no real base. Again lessons learnt to be sure and clear on terms and partnerships.

We have now parted ways with My Little Farm, which was a mutual agreement, we are still friends, on the same mission but coming from very different approaches.

We are all wanting a better world of service, love, kindness and care but sometimes things don't work out that way and thats okay. Because the trials and tests are great for more clarity and only push us forward.

We still have a good relationship with them and wish them well.

Many people have messaged and called me personally asking where that leaves them? because they joined the My Little Farm membership because of Crops, we send our sincere apologies to all of you who have.

We have now managed to find an investor who has helped us buy our own piece of land back in Somerset along with some of the Crops Crew and will be carrying on this mission, with more knowledge and wisdom, giving away more food, running more home education sessions and running more courses on Community Shared Farming.

Anyone who has invested in My Little Farm and still feels aligned with it, great.

If you have invested in My Little Farm through Crops Not Shops and don't feel its for you, once we set up our own private members association, we will honour it and give everyone who went to MLF a membership for free for the value its worth.

We don't quite know what that looks like right now or even who joined through us, but we will do our best to accommodate everyones wishes and needs.

We will be back online now sharing what is going on and really hope this clarifies where we are at.

It's not easy doing this work but it is the mission of the most high and we will never stop.

With all the Love.

Jobs to do in February Part 1 ❤️

February, being the last of the winter months , often has a sting and ends up being the coldest month. So, more than any other month, this one you need to play according to local conditions. It’s best to hold off than try to sow in waterlogged, near frozen ground.

Watch out for good weather in early February, in my experience it means the end of the month will be bitter!!

The seed potatoes should be with you by now, but it’s too early to plant outside so I’d chit them. Chitting is the process of pre-sprouting before planting. Some people say it benefits maincrops but not earlies, some say it’s of no benefit, and some it is of benefit to all types. I think that nobody says it does harm and as the seed tubers are with me I may as well chit them.

If the weather allows, you can direct sow your broad beans in February along with early peas for a May / June harvest. This early in the year your best chance would be to start your peas in the greenhouse or a coldframe and plant later.

The general advice is often to sow parsnips now, but I believe their reputation for poor germination rates is due to being placed in cold wet soil and I have had much better germination rates by sowing in March or even April.

Jerusalem artichokes and shallots can be planted now, although shallots will benefit from covering with a cloche.

Under Cover in Greenhouse, Coldframe and Polytunnel 🪟

If you have a greenhouse, you can get an early crop of lettuce, rocket and radish away in there. You can utilise cloches outdoors but success will be more dependent on the weather.

You can also start to sow your summer cabbages as well as turnips and spinach.
Onions from seed should be started now. But they need about 15 degrees C to get them going so you may be best using the windowsill in a cool room to start them off.

With a heated propagator or using windowsills you can start off aubergine and peppers, chillies and tomatoes I have often found better results by waiting until March, which I put down to day length, but again many people feel this is the right time and it's personal choice.

The big problem at this time of year is available light. Covering cardboard with aluminium foil and standing it to the north side of the seed tray will reflect extra light and help prevent leggy, drawn seedlings without the expense of special horticultural lights.

I know by now everyone is starting to get itchy fingers and eager to get the growing season “growing” but always check your local weather conditions , last frost dates and remember if you sow too early, you will end up with lots of plants and it will be too early to plant out!!!

PEAS AND LOVE ❤️
