Join us tomorrow at 9.30am!

Each year since we started growing flowers to give away in our community, has had its own kind of beauty.

This year, an early, lengthy heatwave, followed by prolonged periods of heavy rain has created some particular challenges (and decimated most of the poor roses…) but we’re so grateful to still have plenty of flowers and foliage to share this weekend.

We’d love to invite you to put together a couple of jam jars with us tomorrow morning - one to take home and enjoy - and one to give away to someone else 😊

WANTED: Empty Glass Jars

If you’re planning to come along to our free ‘make a jam jar bouquet’ workshop on Saturday morning, we’d be so grateful if you could bring along a jam jar or two (or three!…) 🫙🫙🫙 if possible, please.

Our stocks of small and medium sized jars are running a bit low - and we’d love to make sure we have enough jars for all attendees this weekend!

No worries at all if you don’t have any jars to bring along - but hopefully between us we can make sure there are enough for everyone 🙂

Jam Jars (which don’t need to have contained jam!) need to be clean and empty - no lids required.

It would really help if you can remove the label and any remaining glue residue before bringing them along, so they are ready to be used as vases.

If you won’t be coming to the event on Saturday, but have some jars to donate, there is a clear plastic box inside the porch at Holy Trinity on Kilwardby Street. You’ll find a plastic box under the pew on the left hand side of the front porch, just before you enter the glass doors into the main church building.

Thanks so much - we’re looking forward to seeing you on Saturday!

We sometimes get asked about the enormous perennial in the front bed next to the main pathway through Ashby Allotments. It’s Cephalaria Gigantea - a giant lemon-yellow scabious. It’s the kind of plant you sometimes see in large National Trust or RHS Gardens. Ours is shooting up rapidly - and we can’t wait to see it flower over the next couple of weeks!

Love Dahlias? We’ve got a mixed selection of lovely young dahlia plants to sell at our bring & buy plant sale tomorrow (including the fabulous burnt orange coloured David Howard.)

These have been propagated by dividing our own healthy tubers and are tall garden varieties which also make fabulous cut flowers.

Are you looking for some plants for your garden or allotment - or do you have some plants to donate that we can sell?

Come along to our annual Bring & Buy Plant Sale and pick up some new plants for your garden, enjoy a cuppa and some cake - and help us raise funds for our local community gardening project.

Please bring any spare plants with you on the morning (we’d be so grateful for donations, so we have plenty of plants to sell), but don’t worry if you don’t have any plants to donate. Just come along and join in!

We’ll be running a pop-up cafe at the back of church, serving free tea and coffee and homemade cake, so feel free to bring family and friends with you. Accompanied children welcome.

All monies received from plant sales and cafe donations will help us grow and give away more good things in our community this summer.

For a project that unites people to grow and give away flowers to bring joy to others - you might question if being divided was a good thing?!

When it comes to dahlias, it really is.

These David Howard dahlias were gifted to us by a wonderful couple at Holy Trinity in the very early days of The Garden Room.

They’ve been planted in the secret garden behind the church for the last 4 years.

They’re super healthy and have flowered brilliantly there, but it’s now high time to divide them, for their own good.

After a few years, if you just leave Dahlias in the ground, they eventually get sluggish and stop flowering so well.

Dividing them rejuvenates them - and creates even more productive plants.

More plants = more flowers.

Seven huge clumps have been divided into more than 50 divisions - and sprinkled with cinnamon, to help heal the wounds.

Once they’ve woken up, we’ll pot them up again. We’ll plant some ourselves, sell some at our May Plant Sale - and we’ll almost certainly have a few to give away too.

If you’d like to help us grow flowers to give away in our community this summer, we’d love to hear from you. Drop us a message and we’ll be in touch!
