Founded in 1988, the Barn Owl Trust is a small national charity working very hard to conserve one of the most beautiful birds on Earth. Anyone who has ever watched a wild Barn Owl hunting at dusk has surely been touched by the experience. Sadly, these magical birds have become increasingly rare – and the reasons are all man-made. Lack of food due to intensive farming, the loss of roost and nest si

tes, road mortality and rat poison, are the main factors to blame. Happily, there is a great deal that can be done to help wild Barn Owls, and the environment they depend on. Because they are a bird of prey, at the top of the food chain, looking after our Barn Owls means that many other small creatures and plants benefit as well, helping to create sustainable biodiversity. Barn Owl friendly land management and the provision of safe nestboxes are the two most important ways to encourage Barn Owls, but everyone can help by learning about Barn Owls and supporting the Barn Owl Trust!

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUCEMENT 📢
⚠️PLEASE CHECK FOR EVIDENCE OF BARN OWLS BEFORE MOVING YOUR BALES⚠️

A message to all farmers and land managers:
Please be extra careful when moving any bales this summer!

So far, we are finding 2026 to be a bumper year for Barn Owls... which is fantastic news!
However, we are also hearing more occurrences of them being discovered (often once it's too late) using the cosy, dark cavities between stored straw and silage to nest.

Barn Owls are legally protected against disturbance whilst nesting, so moving those bales isn't great news for either the farmer or the owls!

So... if you are planning to move bales around in the coming weeks, please take a moment first to look for evidence of Barn Owls in the building. Here are a few things to look for:
• If a Barn Owl flushes from the building on arrival
• Thumb-sized black pellets
• Listen for a hissing/rasping sound

If you have Barn Owls nesting in your bales, please consider installing a nestbox this autumn 🙏

✨ Prizes to be won! ✨

We have received an amazing prize to be won in our annual prize draw! 🎁

Beevive has donated a Beevive bundle, including their newly designed DIY Bee Hotel Kit, as shown at the Chelsea Flower Show this year! Beevive appeared on Dragons Den and their bee hotel was Gift of The Year in 2024! Thank you so much beevive.com
“Knowing how important bees are and how dangerously they are in decline, Beevive wanted to do something to help. This is when they began by designing the Bee Revival Kit for the next time you meet a bee in need. Since then, their product range and community have grown tremendously and they couldn't ‘bee’ prouder!”

The Barn Owl Trust is very grateful to our prize donors; thank you! Our acceptance of their generous offer does not however, imply endorsement or recommendation of their products or services.

Our draw takes place on Wednesday December 9th – Good Luck!

Can you tell if this Barn Owl is male or female? 🦉🤔

It is almost impossible to tell if a Barn Owl is male or female just seeing it fly overhead. However, a close look may give you a clue... 🔎👇

Do you hear an owl in the trees at night? 🦉🌳

While Tawny Owls are the woodland experts, Barn Owls actually roost in trees occasionally too!

If you hear a classic "hoot," it’s a Tawny. Barn Owls prefer a ghostly screech! 👻
