Ashbourne Creative Stitchers previously Ashbourne Embroiderers Guild

Ashbourne Creative Stitchers previously Ashbourne Embroiderers Guild Our members are interested in all kinds of textile-based activities - embroidery, felt making, crotchet, spinning, weaving and much, much more. We meet in St.

John’s Church Hall, Auction Close, Ashbourne, DE6 1GQ on the 3rd Monday in the month at 7.30pm, but not in August. Our monthly evening meetings include talks and/or mini-workshops given by outside speakers, some of whom are well known, others more local but equally good. Other meetings are run by our own members who share their ideas and expertise on a chosen theme. These meetings are an ideal opp

ortunity to get to know each other and they are always very interesting and rewarding. We welcome visitors and new members whatever their levels of expertise.

Last night Beth who had lead our April meeting was delighted to see the pieces members had brought in. These were completed embroideries of the lino printed birch trees she had given us. As well as demonstrating this technique Beth had shown us block printing, hence the embroidered mushrooms.

Members were most envious of our speakers who have the dream job - working in the textile team at Chatsworth. Susie described the conservation of The Mortlake Tapestries and Olivia told us of her ongoing task restoring the curtains in the library. Their commitment to care for and share the items in the house lead to much discussion.

Having had Zoom meetings in January and February, ACS were back in St John's Hall in March to hear Lucy describe the work she had undertaken on her course in costume creation. Much of the work was done during lockdown which presented its own challenges. She had learned a variety of techniques including machine embroidery, batik, stencilling, millinery, leatherwork and fabric manipulation. There were her workbooks and a selection of her coursework pieces for members to admire including a corset created referencing The Titanic and outfits for Vikings.
Our next meeting on Monday 20th April will be a mini workshop stitching on linoprints.

Why not visit our tree in St Oswald's Church? Members have created a Winter Wonderland with chains in white, silver and gold. The detail and variety of stitches used are well worth a close look.

Although there was no meeting in August, members of Ashbourne Creative Stitchers have not been idle. Personal projects have continued. We have been meeting as usual in stitching groups and there was a display of our work at Ashbourne Show. Items on display attracted a lot of notice and comment. On Monday 15th September our new programme begins with The AGM and a talk on and demonstration of Jam Jar Dyeing. The meeting is in St John's Hall, beginning at 7.30 and visitors are always welcome.
