This is Maggie.

As she sits in the sunshine, eyes half closed and content with the world, you’d never guess the battles she has faced.

Some dogs spend their whole lives knowing safety, warmth and love. Others spend years simply surviving.

Some are born on the streets, where every day is a struggle. Some live in overcrowded shelters. Some endure neglect, loneliness or abuse behind closed doors. Many are used, discarded and forgotten long before anyone learns their name.

Yet somehow, despite everything, they still find it within themselves to trust.

They still wag their tails.

They still lean into a gentle hand.

They still rest their heads on a shoulder and choose love over fear.

Dogs like Maggie remind us just how remarkable they are.

We don’t know every hardship she has endured. We don’t know every battle she has fought. But we do know this: she is brave, resilient and deserving of every kindness the world can offer.

So today, this post is for Maggie and for every street dog, rescue dog and neglected dog who has ever had to be stronger than they should have needed to be.

For every dog still waiting for someone to see them.

For every dog learning that humans can be kind.

For every dog discovering that a warm bed, a full belly and a loving hand are things they no longer have to earn.

You are seen.

You are loved.

And your past does not define your future. ❤️🐾

Please give your dogs an extra cuddle tonight, and spare a thought for those still waiting for their happy ending.😢

🐾 Volunteers’ Week 2026 – Could You Spare a Few Hours? 🐾

As Volunteers’ Week begins, we want to say a huge thank you to each and every one of our amazing volunteers. Whether you walk dogs, cuddle nervous newcomers, help with fundraising, transport dogs, clean kennels, maintain our grounds or simply lend a hand whenever needed, you are the heart and soul of Just for Dogs. We simply couldn’t do what we do without you. ❤️

However, with so many dogs relying on us, we are always looking to welcome new volunteers to our JFD family.

Could you help with any of the following?

🐶 Kennel cleaning
🐶 Dog walking
✂️ Dog grooming
🎨 Painting and decorating
🌿 Gardening
🔨 General maintenance / handyman or handywoman tasks
🚗 Transporting dogs to and from veterinary appointments
💦 Jet washing pathways
🌺 Looking after hanging baskets, patio tubs and outdoor areas

You don’t need to commit to endless hours every week. Whether you can spare a couple of hours a month, a few hours a week, or simply help occasionally when your time allows, every single contribution makes a difference.

Volunteering is a wonderful way to meet like-minded people, enjoy the company of our dogs, learn new skills and most importantly help give rescued dogs the care and love they deserve while they wait for their forever homes.

If you think you could help, no matter how much or how little time you have available, we’d love to hear from you. Together we can make an even bigger difference for the dogs who need us most. ❤️🐾

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE JOURNEY.

WELL DONE GUINI 💖

‘We’ve been patiently car training Guini over the last few weeks & over the bank holiday weekend we were able to take her out in the car for the first time! She’s still nervous of the car but is steadily improving - from not even being comfortable walking past the car parked on the drive to jumping in the back seat. Still not sure about the boot but we’re making progress. Here she is at Hardwick Hall ponds on an early morning walk!

Join us on Saturday 6th June at The Kingsway Pub, Mackworth, for our Preloved Sale in aid of Just for Dogs Rescue & Rehoming Centre.

Come and browse a fantastic selection of clothing, shoes, books, dog toys and accessories, all generously donated to help raise much-needed funds for the rescue dogs in our care. Every purchase will help us continue giving abandoned and unwanted dogs a second chance at the happy lives they deserve.
