Chestnut Tree House

Chestnut Tree House Adding life to shortened years. Chestnut Tree House is the children’s hospice for Sussex and South East Hampshire.
(235)

Chestnut Tree House is a children's charity providing hospice care and community support for children with life-limiting conditions and their families in East and West Sussex and South East Hampshire. Thanks to support from the local community children and families who know they don’t have long together have the chance to live life to the full and say goodbye in the way that is right for them. On

a visit to the House, kids can be astronauts for the day in the multi-sensory room, discover creepy crawlies on a woodland walk, or form their very own pop group in the music room. It is a place where parents can just be parents, and not carers, and where siblings have people to talk to who understand. As well as care provided at the House, there is a Community Nursing Team who visit families at home, taking children out to explore their local community or simply giving tired families and carers the chance to take a well-earned break. Then, when the time comes, we help families say goodbye, in whatever way feels right for them, at home or in the hospice itself. They offer ongoing bereavement support for the whole family. The generosity of the local community makes this happen. It costs over £5 million every year to provide hospice care for local children, with only 17% of this coming from government funding. You can show your support by fundraising, volunteering, taking part in a challenge event, playing the Chestnut Tree House lottery, or leaving a gift in your will.

💛 As Volunteers’ Week continues, we’re shining a light on the incredible people who give their time to support our hospices.

Your time, kindness, and support make such a difference every single day. Because of you, we can continue to provide compassionate care and create meaningful moments for patients and their families ✨

Today, we hear from Alison:

“I love volunteering because I enjoy gardening and get a huge amount of pleasure from seeing the gardens at St Barnabas look lovely. Hospice care matters to me because I have seen what it does for people and their families. We see patients and family members out in the gardens, and we know it is so important to have that special, quiet space. I recommend volunteering to others because it helps you feel part of a team and people really appreciate what you do.”

💛 Volunteers’ Week (1–7 June) is a time to celebrate the incredible people who give their time to causes close to their hearts.

This week, we’ll be sharing stories, photos and videos from our amazing volunteers across Southern Hospice Group 🙌

“Whether it’s serving tea and cake at one of our hospice cafes, keeping our gardens in bloom, or offering kindness and a smile on our inpatient units, our volunteers take on a variety of essential roles,” says Georgia Ellick, volunteering services lead at Southern Hospice Group.

In fact, in 2026, our volunteers are expected to give an incredible 140,000 hours of their time - the equivalent of £1.79 million 💫

✨ A heartfelt thank you to every single one of you - we couldn’t do it without you.

Last night, family support worker Helen represented Chestnut Tree House at the Worthing Community Awards 🏆

The awards honour Millie, who is at the heart of our summer appeal. Helen cared for Millie when she came to Chestnut Tree House and was invited to attend the awards alongside Karen Brailey, our Community Team Lead, and Millie’s parents, James and Shelley.

Helen says: "It was an honour and a privilege to attend the Worthing Community Awards last night as a guest of James and Shelley. I shared a new project we've launched, inspired by Millie, which will give other families comfort and support at the most difficult of times. Millie was an incredible young woman and made such an impression on all who met her."

Also at the event was Patrick, who won the Dad of the Year award. He recently completed an ultra-marathon to fundraise money for Chestnut Tree House in memory of his son Raif. Congratulations! 🎉

This year's raffle proceeds of £978 will be donated to Chestnut Tree House, helping us continue to support families like Millie’s. Thank you for all your generosity and support. 💛

A HUGE thank you to the generous donor who kindly made this possible!

Keep an eye out for Sidney at the Littlehampton 10k – he’ll be ready to go in his new running shoes… size squirrel! 👟✨

Millie was funny, spirited, and full of life. She was always on the go, taking out lampshades as she danced through the house.

After years of constant headaches Millie was diagnosed with a brain tumour. She endured surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy with extraordinary courage.

Chestnut Tree House became a place where Millie was more than her illness. There were pizza-making evenings, pamper days, laughter, and friendship.

When the tumour returned and there were no more treatment options, the team helped the family make precious memories together. Millie could face the end of her life on her own terms. 💛

This Summer, we invite you to join us in making memories! 🌻

At Chestnut Tree House, we support families and children with life-limiting conditions in making the most of the precious time they have. Together, we are making memories that will bring comfort to families for years to come.

Making memories looks different for every child. From exploring our sensory garden to becoming a mermaid for the day or simply enjoying a family outing with our special wheelchair bike, what matters most is that these memories are created together.

Thanks to your support, we can continue providing incredible opportunities and making precious memories for children and their families in our care. 💛

Good luck to Patrick and Lynsey who are running the London to Brighton 100k ultra-marathon today to fundraise for Chestnut Tree House. We’ll be thinking of you and cheering you on! 🏃

Patrick and Lynsey are taking on this epic challenge in memory of their son, Raif, and to give back to Chestnut Tree House, who supported the family during Raif’s final months.

Lynsey says: “We will forever be grateful to Chestnut for the comfort, normality and support they provided us during the most difficult time of our lives, and we truly treasure the memories we made there as a family of four.”

Huge thanks to the Lewsey family and friends, and to anyone who fundraises for children’s hospice care. Your support makes a real difference to the families we care for. 💛

Two families have shared how running the London Marathon in memory of their children helped raise vital funds for Chestnut Tree House 💛🏃

Marty Stapleton ran in memory of his son Sullivan, raising an incredible £5,620.

Helen Brown also took on the challenge alongside her mum Mandy, after her son Archie was cared for by Chestnut Tree House. With their wider fundraising efforts through business Paw Paddock they have raised more than £40,000!

She said: “Within the first few days of losing him, Chestnut Tree House scooped us up and treated Archie and us with such love and care. We will never forget how special they made that time and have such admiration for what they do.”

Together, their incredible support is part of the amazing £201,384 raised by almost 300 runners for hospice care across Sussex and South East Hampshire 🙌

Thank you to every runner going the extra mile for local hospice care ✨
