Grip Fast the Light RBP 54

Grip Fast the Light RBP 54 Encamped at Markethill since 1847 Grip Fast the Light RBP No. 54 is is the oldest Preceptory within Markethill District Chapter.

Our Warrant, costing 12s 6d, was issued on 8th December 1847 to Sir Knight John Milligan, with our first encampment held on 31st December 1847, when twenty-one candidates were raised to the dignity of Royal Black Knighthood. Nearly 175 years after it’s formation, RBP No. 54 continues to play a prominent role in the District Chapter, and with a blend of experienced and youthful Sir Knights, the hig

h principles of the Black Institution are assured. Preceptory members continue to witness for the Protestant Faith, in order to ensure that all shall “Grip Fast The Light”.

Sir Knight and Brother Mervyn Robinson was a long standing and member of Lattery Purple Heroes LOL 222 and Grip Fast the Light RBP 54. Aged 47 and a married man with children, Sir Knight Robinson, was also a member of the Royal Ulster Constabulary having previously served in the B Specials.

On the night of Wednesday 27th May 1981, Sir Knight Robinson was off duty and had called into his local public house. A place where he was well known by one and all from all backgrounds. Sir Knight Robinson was about to get into his car at 11:41pm when he was shot by an IRA gunman about 200 yards from his home. He was taken to Daisy Hill Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Sir Knight Robinson had been stationed in Newry and was a member of the RUC for 12 years.

Minutes from the June meeting of the Preceptory held on 3rd June 1981 record, “the Worshipful Master [W. Sir Knt. William Walker] spoke of the tragic passing of one of our most respected Sir Knights, Sir Knight Mervyn Robinson who was murdered by the IRA. Sir Knight Robinson was the son-in-law of Sir Knight William Chambers (senior) and the brother-in-law of Sir Knight William Chambers (junior). Sir Knight Walker expressed the sympathy of the Preceptory with these two good Sir Knights, also with Sir Knight Mervyn Robinson’s wife and three young daughters at their terrible loss. The Sir Knights then stood in silence while the obituary prayer was read."

While there are those that continue to re-write history to defend callous and cowardly acts like these, we remember it for what it was; the cold blooded murder of an innocent man. We give thanks to God today for Sir Knight Robinson's service to both his country and to this Preceptory. We remember too that those responsible for this murder will one day have to answer to a higher power for their deeds.

The Officers and Sir Knights of Grip Fast the Light RBP No. 54 regret the passing of our esteemed honorary member Sir Knight Edsel Muldrew, one of the Preceptory’s longest standing members.

Proposed for membership by Sir Knights George Woods and James Quinn in October 1960, Sir Knight Muldrew was initiated on 2nd November 1960 with W. Sir Knt. John Rea presiding in the chair. He subsequently attained the Red Cross and was a faithful member for over 65 years, receiving his 40 Year service medal in December 2000 and was made an honorary member in 2013.

The Preceptory tenders its deepest sympathies to Edsel’s children Joy, John, Janice and Judith and the wider family circle at this difficult time.
