Yesterday was a very special day at Ardross Ark. ☀️
With the final pieces of our stained-glass window restoration now complete, we wanted to take a moment to recognise two very special people who have been part of this journey over the past few years – Alec Galloway Stained Glass and Lou.
Restoring historic stained glass is far more than simply repairing windows. It is a highly specialised craft that combines artistry, history and technical skill, requiring years of dedication to master. As these traditional skills become increasingly rare, the work of craftspeople like Alec and Lou becomes ever more valuable.
Alec is a highly respected Scottish stained-glass artist and conservator whose work has helped preserve historic buildings across Scotland and beyond. He also spent many years teaching Architectural Glass at the Edinburgh College of Art, ensuring these remarkable skills continue to be passed on to future generations.
We have been incredibly fortunate to have Alec and Lou entrusted with the restoration of Ardross Ark's beautiful windows. Their craftsmanship, professionalism and attention to detail have been outstanding, but what has made this journey even more memorable is the relationship we have built along the way. Over the years, we've shared many conversations, plenty of laughter and a mutual appreciation for preserving something truly special.
Their work has done much more than restore stained glass. Together, they have helped preserve an important part of Ardross Ark's history, character and identity, ensuring these beautiful windows can continue to inspire future generations.
As we look through these photographs from yesterday, we're reminded that heritage projects are ultimately about people—the people who dedicate their lives to traditional crafts, those who believe these historic places are worth preserving, and those who come together to make it happen.
Alec and Lou, thank you. It has been an absolute pleasure working with you, and your contribution to Ardross Ark will be appreciated for many years to come.
