We were delighted to attend the launch of PSNI Connect at the Dunadry Hotel on Tuesday, representing Black Diamond Initiatives NI.

It was a valuable opportunity to learn more about the PSNI Connect initiative, its aims, and the work being developed to strengthen engagement, communication and relationships between the PSNI and communities across Northern Ireland.

For BDINI, opportunities like this are important as we continue to build relationships, contribute to conversations around community safety and inclusion, and help ensure that the voices and experiences of racialised minority communities and families are represented.

Thank you to the PSNI team for the invitation and for creating space for meaningful connection, learning and partnership.

Spirit of Volunteering awards 2026

🏆💎 A Proud Moment for Black Diamond Initiatives NI! 💎🏆

We are absolutely delighted to celebrate our Founder and Chairperson, Sarah Freeman, who was named the winner of the Newcomer to Volunteering Award at the Antrim and Newtownabbey Spirit of Volunteering Awards 2026.

Held at the beautiful Theatre at The Mill and hosted by Claire McCollum, the evening recognised the outstanding volunteers who generously give their time, skills and energy to support others, strengthen communities and make a difference across the Borough.

Sarah’s award recognises the passion, commitment and leadership she has brought to Black Diamond Initiatives NI—creating welcoming spaces, building partnerships and championing the wellbeing, inclusion and belonging of racialised minority families, newcomers and other underrepresented communities.

We were also incredibly proud that Black Diamond Initiatives NI was nominated for the Team Award. This recognition belongs to every member and volunteer who has helped turn our vision into meaningful action. Although we did not take home the Team Award, being nominated among so many inspiring organisations was a tremendous honour and an important recognition of how far our young organisation has come.

We extend our sincere thanks to Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council, the award organisers and judges, and Castle Mall Shopping Centre, sponsor of the Newcomer to Volunteering Award, for this wonderful recognition.

Congratulations, Sarah—and thank you to the entire Black Diamond family. This achievement belongs to all of us. ❤️

We may be newcomers, but we are already making our mark—and we are only getting started.

✨ BDINI Represented as President Catherine Connolly Hears Rural Voices ✨

Black Diamond Initiatives NI was deeply honoured to be among 24 community organisations invited by Rural Community Network to meet the President of Ireland, Catherine Connolly, and her husband, Brian McEnery, during their visit to County Tyrone on Saturday, 26 September.

Our Founder and Chairperson, Sarah Freeman, joined community leaders from across Northern Ireland and the border regions for a thoughtful and engaging conversation about rural life, inclusion, peacebuilding and the power of locally led action.

Sarah shared insights from BDINI’s work with racialised minority families and other underrepresented communities, including the importance of creating belonging, strengthening relationships between established and newer communities, and ensuring that minority voices are meaningfully included in conversations about rural development and community life.

President Connolly listened with genuine warmth and interest, taking time to engage personally with participants and returning during the wider discussion to themes raised through BDINI’s contribution. It was a powerful reminder that the lived experiences of minority communities must be recognised as part of the broader story of rural Northern Ireland.

We were also encouraged by the emphasis placed on cross-border learning and cooperation—connecting communities North–South and East–West to share knowledge, strengthen peace and reconciliation, and develop collective responses to common challenges.

Our sincere thanks to Rural Community Network, CEO Kate Clifford and the entire RCN team for bringing together such a diverse and inspiring group of community leaders—and for creating a space in which rural voices could be heard at the highest level.

For BDINI, this was more than a memorable occasion. It was an affirmation that our work, our communities and the voices we carry belong in these important rooms.

Building relationships. Strengthening belonging. Creating change.

Build. Belong. Become.

Black Diamond Initiatives NI (BDINI) and GLOW NI were proud to be official partners of JNWANY Designs for an evening that celebrated creativity, individuality and some incredible emerging design talent. 👗✨

The runway featured collections from:

✨ G. Bowman Designs
✨ Zoe Alphonso

It was also a privilege for our founder to have the opportunity to speak about the work we do at Black Diamond Initiatives NI — supporting racialised minority families, strengthening belonging, creating opportunities and helping people to Build • Belong • Become.

For us, partnership is about more than placing a logo on an event. It is about showing up in spaces where talent, culture, enterprise and community meet — and ensuring that diverse voices and creativity are seen, celebrated and given room to grow.

A huge congratulations to JNWANY Designs, all the featured designers, models, organisers and everyone who helped bring such a vibrant evening to life.

🌍✨ What a celebration of culture, community and connection! ✨🌍

Yesterday, Black Diamond Initiatives NI (BDINI) was delighted to be part of the Afro Diverse Family Fun Day at the beautiful Castle Gardens in Antrim — and what an incredible day it was! ❤️

From the electric energy of Makhadzi, to the wonderful performance from Diane from Zimbabwe, the brilliant Ulster-Scots band, and the many cultures, families, sounds and stories brought together in one space — Antrim was truly alive. 🎶💃🏾🥁

Days like this remind us why creating spaces where people can meet, celebrate, learn from one another and feel that they belong matters so much.

At BDINI, our work is rooted in exactly that:
Build • Belong • Become.

We loved seeing families laughing, children enjoying themselves, communities mixing and culture being celebrated so proudly right here in Antrim.

A huge well done to Afro Diverse and everyone involved in bringing such a colourful and joyful event to our community. 👏🏾❤️

Here’s to more spaces where our diversity is not simply acknowledged — but celebrated.
