The Air Training Corps (ATC) is a youth organisation sponsored by the Ministry of Defence and the Royal Air Force. The majority of staff are volunteers although some are paid for full-time work. Although many ATC cadets go on to join the RAF or other services, the ATC is no longer set up as a recruiting organisation. Activities include sport, trekking, parade drill, rifle shooting, plane and glide

r flying and other outdoor activities, as well classification training leading up to a BTEC in Aviation Studies. Week-long trips to RAF stations, or camps offering adventure training or music, allow the opportunity for cadets to gain a taste of military life and often to gain some flying experience in RAF gliders and RAF training aircraft such as the Grob Tutor. Cadet membership can begin from the start of school Year 9 Northern Ireland. New members will join as a junior cadet (probationer) and can earn positions of increasing responsibility in a military rank structure, as well as having increasing skill and competence recognised in a classification scheme (First Class, Leading, Senior, Master and Instructor) . Service as a cadet ends at the age of 20.

833 are pleased to reveal our official Squadron badge approved by Garter College of Arms London. We are so chuffed with how it has turned out and look forward to receiving the painting soon and arranging a very special night to have it presented.

The blazon (official description in heraldic language) is:
In front of a Saltire couped urdy Gules a representation of Antrim Round Tower on a Grassy Mount proper

The Motto is:
UNITY MAKES STRENGTH

The St Patrick’s cross is a reference to the foundation of a monastery at Antrim around the year 495, some thirty years after the death of Saint Patrick, round which grew a settlement that became the town of Antrim.

The Round Tower is a noted landmark of the town, with the mount representing the Anglo-Norman motte of the original Antrim Castle that is still seen today. In addition, the mount is an allusion to the Irish name of Antrim, Aontroim meaning ‘lone ridge’.

Sector One Adventure Training & Duke of Edinburgh Skills Day in the Antrim Hills 🥾

We’ve had a fantastic day alongside 2062 Carrickfergus Squadron Royal Air Force Cadets 833DF Larne Royal Air Force Air Cadets & 1919 Newtownabbey Squadron Royal Air Force Air Cadets in the Antrim Hills, developing adventure training skills and strengthening teamwork across Sector One, all while working towards our Duke of Edinburgh expeditions. The great weather was definitely a bonus!

Our cadets put their map reading and navigation skills into practice, tackling the terrain with confidence and determination. They also learned essential expedition skills, including setting up tents, using storm shelters and cooking meals safely.

A great effort from everyone involved and plenty of valuable experience gained along the way. Well done to all who took part!

Over the past few months, several of our cadets have been working hard to complete their Level 2 Award in Sustainability, learning how they can make a real difference within our squadron and the wider community.

We wanted to turn our learning into action – so when the opportunity came to support nature locally, we were ready to roll up our sleeves!

Our cadets were keen to try something new (still related to flight of course!) and help the RSPB by making clay Lapwing models. These wading birds have sadly been in decline across Northern Ireland, and we hope these models will help encourage more pairs to return. By supporting conservation efforts like this, our cadets are helping to protect local wildlife for future generations.

A huge thank you to the RSPB team for sharing their knowledge about these remarkable wading birds and the role they play in our local ecosystem. Our cadets thoroughly enjoyed designing and painting the models – and even more so knowing they’re contributing to something bigger.

We’re delighted that one of our cadets at 833 Antrim Squadron, Bridget, has been selected for the National Band of the Royal Air Force Air Cadets and will perform at the upcoming Birmingham International Tattoo!

After completing an intensive training camp at RAF Halton, Bridget was selected from over 300 cadets who auditioned. This is a fantastic achievement, we are very proud that she will be representing 833 Squadron and Northern Ireland Wing.

Well done Bridget!

Today, 833 Antrim Squadron proudly took part in the Royal British Legion’s Remembrance Day Parade in Antrim.

A huge well done to all our cadets for your dedication and effort — from preparing your uniforms to practicing your drill, your hard work was evident today and we are very proud.

Thank you also to family members and friends who came out to show their support.

Cpl Brooke McMahon laid the wreath on behalf of 833 Antrim Squadron, and FS Dylan Bailie represented the squadron as our standard bearer.

It was a privilege to pay our respects.
Lest we forget.

Today, Flight Sergeant Charles Creighton represented his family and the squadron at the Royal British Legion Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall.

Charles attended in honour of his family’s remarkable service: his great great grandfather, a WW1 Battle of the Somme survivor with the Royal Irish Rifles; his great grandfather, a WW2 D-Day veteran and survivor with the Royal Marine Commando; and his late grandfather, who served in the Ulster Defence Regiment.

He drew particular attention as he proudly wore the Legion d’Honneur Medal, awarded by France to his great grandfather for his heroic service on D-Day. A powerful reminder of the courage, sacrifice and legacy carried through generations.

Well done, Charles. A truly fitting tribute. 🌺

A huge thank you to the people of Antrim for your incredible support with the Poppy Appeal this morning.

Our cadets were out collecting on behalf of the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal, and the generosity, kindness and warm words from everyone we met were genuinely appreciated. Every donation helps support veterans, serving personnel and their families, and your contributions made a real difference today.

Thank you, Antrim, for always showing up. ❤️🌺
