Annesley and District WI plant a tree to commemorate 110 years of the Women’s Institute.

2025 marked 110 years of the WI. Annesley and District WI wanted to plant a tree to commemorate this. After a few delays finding a suitable location we planted a British apple tree in the garden of Annesley and Felley Parish Hall this week. The parish council were very supportive and found a suitable location for the tree and a commemorative plaque. Garden centre Reuben Shaw Garden Centre gave a generous discount on the purchase of the tree. The plaque was a team effort coordinated by David George (material supplied by Nefco Multi Metals, welding done by Andy Carlin AC tig welding and engraving by Mark Tec). We hope the tree will be enjoyed by the many people who use the garden in the same way that the WI has been enjoyed by many ladies in the last 110 years.

Tonight the ladies of Annesley and District WI enjoyed a lovely evening being entertained by All Around the Shire with their presentation “my Mum had one of those”. Their selection of objects, stories, songs and history had us remembering, laughing and learning. We are looking forward to seeing Janet and Paul again for one of their other fascinating presentations. Members also brought their own items for our “my Mum had one of those” display table and we collected items the local food bank.

Last night our ladies were treated to a fascinating talk by Clare Read O’Donnell about the history of the pork pie, its heritage in Melton Mowbray and a demonstration on how to make one. Clare was a captivating speaker and we will definitely book her again.

We held a small raffle which raised funds for our group and made a reasonable collection for the local food bank.

If this sounds like something you would enjoy why not come along and see what the WI is all about.

We’ve hit 100 followers! That doesn’t sound much but for a small village WI like ours it means a lot.

As well as collecting this donation for the local food bank our small group of ladies met tonight and had a very interesting talk by Betty Kujawinski and Ann George about the history of Newstead Abbey titled “Monastery to Country House”. Betty used to be a tour guide at The Abbey so was very knowledgeable and entertaining.

Next month at our meeting we will be having a demonstration by a pork pie maker. If you are interested in joining please get in touch, your first two visits are currently free.
