Repurposing something is a very good idea if it has lost its original use.

Even if it doesn't have sentimental value, please think twice before putting it into landfill.

Here are just three suggestions:

1. Towels can be donated to charities like the Wildlife Trust.
2 Duvet covers, sheets, curtains etc can be used as dust sheets for decorating or cut into smaller sections for dusters or cleaning cloths.
3. Carpets are useful for covering compost bins on allotments or in gardens.

Sometimes things are beyond repair, no matter what tricks our repairers use. But even then, they still try to help you out. Repairer Annelies Bolijn remembers a woman who was very attached to her worn-out duvet. "I advised her to make a small bag from the fabric to hold, for example, potpourri. Dear Visitors,

Due to ongoing roof repairs, parking at St Ann's Hall will be extremely limited and you may not get a space this Saturday.

We are hoping to be able to allocate a visitor disabled space which will be available on a first come first served basis.

We recommend you park in nearby local public carparks or arrange to be dropped off & collected from nearby.

Apart from that it is business as usual at the Repair Cafe!

We look forward to seeing you all with your items for repair.

Update on 15th August Repair Cafe event.

As there is no parking on the 15th available due to building works, we remind visitors to park elsewhere, on the streets (avoiding permit-only spaces) or car parks.

We will try and accommodate blue badge holders.

We apologise but this is out of our control.

Sometimes bringing recycling closer to home is all it takes ♻️

In Huntingdonshire, bright pink recycling bins were placed in busy community locations, making it simple for people to recycle their unwanted electricals while they were already out and about.

So far Huntingdonshire have:
📈 Achieved a 658% increase in small electricals recycling.
✅ Collected more than 12.5 tonnes of electricals.
🌍 Avoided up to 13 tonnes of CO₂ emissions.

Anything with a plug, battery or cable can be repaired, reused or recycled.

Repair Cafes save you money as well as reduce the huge impact of waste in the environment.

🛠️🪡Hungerford Repair Café report – 18th July 2026🛠️🪡

We live in a consumer society. According to environmental scientist and sustainability expert Jonathon Porritt, "We are persuaded to spend money we don’t have on things we don’t need to create impressions that won’t last." Consumerism tricks us into buying costly replacements instead of fixing what we have.

At the Hungerford Repair Café last Saturday, one visitor told us, "I have a quite expensive but very standard office chair which I use at my desk all the time. It used to have a simple plastic block which stopped the back from tipping, but this has broken." By bringing the chair to us we were able to fix the seat back in position and save the gentleman from buying a new chair.

This throwaway habit constantly drains household budgets and hides the massive long-term costs of waste. Repair cafés break this expensive cycle, saving people money and proving that repairing is better than replacing.

Another regular visitor told us that she has "saved hundreds of pounds" by bringing her items to us instead of throwing them away.

But the cost of consumerism goes beyond the household budget. In a typical Repair Café event we may save 80 kg of household items from recycling or from being sent to a landfill site. Dealing with the huge volumes of waste material that we throw away is a huge cost to local governments, and ultimately to the taxpayer.

In its "Spending Plans for 2025 / 2026", West Berkshire Council allocated a massive £187 million toward daily essential services, which includes £20 million on bin collections, recycling, and waste management. The Environment Agency estimates the total cost to clear the massive illegal waste mountain near Kidlington to be £7.3 million.
