Our staff are at the heart of everything we do. For a young person, having the right person beside them at the right time can make all the difference - especially at what may be a crucial point in their life.

Our research with the University of Southampton highlighted how important trusted relationships with Youth Practitioners are to young people. They spoke about YBRP as a safe, non-judgemental space where they felt listened to, understood and able to open up.

Confidence 💛

When young people were asked about the impact of taking part in YBRP programmes, this was the word that came through most strongly. Through trusted relationships, supportive spaces, practical life skills and opportunities to try new things, young people told us they felt more able to believe in themselves, interact with others and look ahead with more independence.

Confidence only grows when young people feel heard, accepted and supported to take their next step - that is what we are here to do.

This powerful quote comes from a young person involved in our recent research with the University of Southampton. As part of this work, young people shared their experiences of taking part in YBRP programmes - what has helped them, what has changed for them, and what support has made the biggest difference.

Again and again, we heard about the importance of trusted relationships, safe spaces, confidence, belonging, practical life skills and hope for the future. This quote says so much about why that matters.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing more findings from the research, shining a light on what young people told us and how their voices will continue to shape the future of our charity.

On Wednesday 28 October, The Lights will be taken over by live bands, solo artists and lots of energy - all created around young people aged 11 - 18.

We’re inviting young creatives aged 14–17 to take part in a free Street Art Workshop at The Lights on the 15th of August at 1pm-4pm.

Working with local artist Kezia Hoffman, you will explore street art, and help a project to design and create a large-scale mural that will enhance the local area.

This is a brilliant opportunity for anyone interested in street art, design, graphics or using creativity to say something meaningful.
