Makaton Sign of the Week: Dance!

This week’s sign is dance, a fun and energetic word for movement, music, and having fun! 🎶✨

To sign dance:

Hold both hands in front of you with your palms facing down.
Move your hands up and down alternately, as if they are dancing.
Always speak the word clearly while making the sign.

We’re recruiting!

We’re looking for some new people to join our team:

Driver -
Driving our school minibuses to bring pupils into school in the morning and take them home in the afternoon. Midas training will be provided.
Monday–Friday | Term-time only | Morning and afternoon runs
Starting January 2027

Transport Assistant -
Working alongside our drivers to support pupils on their journeys to and from school. No formal qualifications are needed, but you’ll need to be comfortable working with children and young people with additional needs.
Monday–Friday | Term-time only | Morning and afternoon runs

You don’t need to have all the answers. We’re looking for people who are kind, reliable, patient, good with people and able to work as part of a team.

We’re proud of our Icknield family, and our motto “Your journey matters” applies to our staff just as much as it does to our pupils.

This week’s sign is autumn, a beautiful season of changing leaves, cooler days, and cosy moments.

To sign autumn:

Hold your dominant hand open with your fingers spread.

Move your hand downwards in front of you, gently wiggling your fingers as if leaves are falling from a tree.

Always speak the word clearly while making the sign.

What a wonderful start to the new school year in Tambourine Class!

The children have settled back into school brilliantly and have taken the new routines, friends and adults in their stride. It has been lovely to see their confidence growing each day.

This term, our topic is ‘In the Forest’ and we have already been busy exploring through lots of sensory and practical activities. We started with a Bucket Session, exploring woodland animals, leaves and natural objects, and the children have also been enjoying our forest sensory story.

Learning has continued beyond the classroom too! The children enjoyed a trip to Tesco, where they practised their shopping skills, and they have been developing their independence by making delicious sandwiches together.

In RSHE, we have been thinking about what makes a happy and safe class, including being kind, listening to others, having fun and keeping ourselves and our friends safe.

We are so proud of how well the children have settled and can’t wait for more exploring, learning and fun as we continue our journey ‘In the Forest’!

Once again, we are proud to be fundraising for the fantastic Jeans for Genes charity!

Tomorrow, Friday 18th September, we would love to see as much denim as possible around school!

We kindly suggest a small donation of £1 to £2 per child, with all money raised going towards this wonderful charity, which is particularly close to our hearts as we have many students here living with genetic conditions.

Would your child prefer to wear their school clothes? That's absolutely fine!

Donations are still very welcome.

Every donation, big or small, can help make a difference. 💙

This week’s sign is the world, a wonderful word for talking about our planet, different countries, people, and places.

To sign the world:

Hold both hands in front of you with your fingers spread.

Move your hands around in a large circular motion, as if showing the shape of the Earth.

Always speak the words clearly while making the sign.

As another successful year at Icknield comes to a close, we would like to thank all our students and staff for their hard work, commitment, and the many wonderful memories we've shared!

A special goodbye goes to those students leaving us this summer. We are incredibly proud of you and wish you every success and happiness in the future, you will always be part of the Icknield family.

We hope everyone has a safe, and well-deserved summer holiday.

We look forward to welcoming both our returning and new students back on Thursday 3rd September 2026. Please remember that Tuesday 1st and Wednesday 2nd September are INSET days.
