Arbaeen, meaning the “40th” in Arabic — signifies the 40th Day of commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussain and his companions. Interwoven within the chronology of 40 days, lies the tragedy of the victims from the family of Imam Hussain, held captive by the forces of Yazid following Ashura.

Arbaeen is a tribute to the survivors: the widowed mothers and orphaned children, who were held captive and forced to journey from Karbala to Kufa and then Damascus, in the midst of facing conflict, captivity, grief, bereavement, horrific confines of imprisonment and estrangement from their home. On the 40th Day the survivors return to Karbala.

Inspired by the lessons of Karbala - the Lady Fatemah Trust has continued to serve through 40 days. Because survivors deserve integrity.

At The Lady Fatemah Trust, we serve to provide clean and purified water to every single pilgrim and local resident of the holy shrine cities of Najaf & Karbala.

Our sustainable water purification infrastructure, built over the last 3 years in collaboration with Jaffer Family Foundation, can provide 8 million litres of purified water.

Every day - in every season.

During Arbaeen, that’s 800 million cups of water served to the pilgrims, honouring the legacy of Imam Hussain in the land of sacrifice.

Arbaeen is the world’s largest peaceful gathering.

The mass gathering in Southern Iraq, is a tribute to Sayeda Zainab and the mothers of Karbala. Their resilience from Kabala, to Kufa, to Damascus, carried their loved ones through days of unimaginable grief and hardship. Captivity did not prevent them from standing upright in their dignity, honouring the oppressed, and protecting truth in the face of tyranny.

At The Lady Fatemah Trust, their legacy is honoured through Mothernomics — our programme supporting vulnerable mothers and widows in the land of Karbala, who sew and produce modest, comfortable and affordable garments to sell, so single mothers can lead a dignified life.

As Arbaeen approaches again this year, the mothers are hard at work — sewing walk sets, preparing majalis clothing, and embroidering hijabs with the names of Ahlulbayt. They’re also stitching school uniforms ready for the return to school straight after Arbaeen. 🧵

On Saturday 18 July, we had the honour of being the Platinum sponsors for the The Muslim Council of Britain Muslim Mental Health Summit 🌿

Over 400 people from across the UK came together to talk openly about mental health — through powerful keynotes Mind, honest conversations, and moments of real connection and awareness at stalls.

Our CEO, Mukhtar Karim, opened our talk with “Why Mental Health at The Lady Fatemah Trust?” — exploring why this work sits at the heart of everything we do.

We also shared how we’re building mental health systems from the ground up in Zanzibar, through Pamoja Afya Bora and ATEB — and what we hope to build together here in the UK.

Healing isn’t something we pass down. It’s something we build intentionally, and with patience together.
