These lovely Pyramidal Orchids, along with Bee Orchids, are flowering now in the Wild Amersham meadows at Amersham Hospital. Orchids have very, very small seeds which are wind blown, often for many miles. They need fungus to germinate and will grow underground for years before shooting up above ground - hence the need for undisturbed ground.

From 6–14 June 2026, people across the UK will come together for Great Big Green Week - the UK’s biggest celebration of action for climate and nature.

This year’s theme is Together for Good. That could mean caring for a local green space, joining a repair café, taking part in a nature walk, hosting a film screening, or simply showing up for your community.

Whatever it looks like, Great Big Green Week is about the power we have when we come together for people, climate and nature.

📅 Save the date and start imagining what you and your community could do.

Every two years, the Chesham Bois parish council holds a summer fete on the Common along North Road. This is a very popular occasion, featuring music, entertainment and a wide assortment of stalls, selling food, drink and local crafts. Many local organisations are also represented. The fete has enough to occupy residents and visitors to Chesham Bois for a summer afternoon in a lovely location.

Sustainable Amersham will be there, watch out for us for some activities and sustainable fun!

Up at 5am today for the Wild Amersham bird survey - lovely to hear and see many birds, including scratchy whitethroat, chattering sparrows (which are in steep decline) and the squeaky-door chirp of a greenfinch (a species badly affected by a disease spread through bird feeders).

For May I have chosen the Forget-me-not (Myosotis). The Latin Myosotis comes from the Ancient Greek for mouse’s ear which the leaf is said to resemble, and the origin of the name Forget-me-not is said to come from a German legend about a knight who drowned while picking the flowers for his lover on a river bank. Of course the flower is used as a symbol of remembrance.
