When a child in foster care moves placement, one of the hardest things they can lose is their school.

Their friends. The teacher who knew their name. The classroom that was starting to feel familiar. The lunchtime routine.

Foundations Matter works to place children as close to their existing school as possible, so that when other things change, that thread of belonging remains.

Lots of schools go back this week. For most families that means new shoes, packed lunches and a nervous breakfast.

For families who foster it means that and possible lots more too. A child who equates something new with a threat to be feared, a carer navigating new uniforms and forms for a child they have only just met. A teacher who will meet a child whose story they don't know yet.

This month at Foundations Matter, we're thinking about belonging in school. What it looks like when it works and what can get in the way. And what a powerful differene it can make when someone shows up consistently for a child.

For children in stable Scottish foster families, summer can quietly become a season of growth, a time when safety deepens.
